About Gemma: Gemma Cubero del Barrio is a Spanish/American documentary director and producer. For the last 24 years she has gained a breath of experience producing non-fiction documentary films and original programming with her company Talcual Films. Her documentaries include: Ella Es El Matador (She Is The Matador), Ottomaticake, Our Atoll Speaks, and The Island In Me. Gemma is a board member of NETPAC board and serves on the jury of the News and Documentary Emmy Awards. At the moment she is developing Emotions Revealed, a new documentary feature about the pioneering life and work of psychologist Paul Ekman. My most favorite part of the Academy Awards yesterday was to see Lourdes Portillo with the beautiful shot of Señorita Extraviada ! To this day I remember when we filmed that scene in Juarez with the school girl that ones her eye into the camera - forever in my 💛🙏🏼

I wanted to share some lovely words and photos we got from the screening of The Island In Me in Zurich at the Paulus Akademie - here the words from the programmer:

Honored to announced that Our Atoll Speaks and The Island In Me have been translated to the German language !

Both films have been selected to screen in Switzerland and Germany as part of the World Day of Prayer!

To give you some context, since I was not familiar myself with this world wide event, in 1927 a World Day of Prayer was celebrated internationally for the first time by Christian women of different denominations. It was established in the United States out of a desire to create peace and build community. The women of the World Day of Prayer also established important signals for peace and reconciliation and I was told that also fought for equal rights for women in church and society. These women of this event were among the first ones to campaign for environmental protection. They fearlessly stood up against racism and intolerance.
This event is nowadays celebrated on the same date in March in more than 150 countries around the world.

Every year a different country or region in the world will be featured and liturgy and spiritual materials as well as films will be offered to create dialogue. The women in their communities will be able to use these resources to create awareness and dialogue.

This year the country chosen is The Cook Islands and the organizers have chose both films about Pukapuka to show to communities around the world.

I have been told by a dear friend from Switzerland that The World of Day of Prayer is a way to honor different spiritual ways of life all over the world.

The World Day of Prayer will take place on March 7th and tomorrow as a preview to this day The Island In Me will screen at the Paulus Akademie in Zurich.

A rare treat 🏝️🎥💛🌊 - I have been invited by the Outrigger Canoe Club to present the films I have made about and with the People of Pukapuka, Johnny Frisbie and Amelia Borofsky - and to share my journey this coming Tuesday in Waikiki. I will be presenting beautiful photos of this epic journey,, will screen Our Atoll Speaks to their historical committee members and show a few scenes of The Island in Me as a preview since I am waiting news about the documentary will be broadcast on PBS in the near future.

Lovely 3 nights and days filming with Walter Pérez and Leonardo Sardella in Brooklyn and Manhattan to continue with the documentary project El Abrazo that I began in 2010 … here some sweet memories… I woke up this morning of shooting a few more scenes to learn that my flight to Spain had been affected by the global tech outage - 🙃… not giving up and after hours on the phone I managed to reschedule my itinerary for the same day and heading back now to Valencia, Spain this evening ! More tango filming awaits in my birth country and very much looking forward to some leasure time with family 💛🦋🛩️🌸 Thank you Walter and Leo and sweet doggies Waileo, Wendy and Frida again for these few days of reconnection after so long and for your collaboration filming more scenes with you for El Abrazo! To be continued …

Beautiful days filming with Paul Ekman in Dan Francisco recording more of his memories and also making a dream come true for me, that he would reunite with Samuel Baum the creator of the TV series Lie To Me who based his work on Paul’s scientific discoveries, a true collaborator ans now a dear friend 💛 here photos with Paul’s daighrer’s Eve Ekman and my beautiful generous talented film team Vicente Franco, DP, sound recordist Ray Day and editor and camera Kyung Lee along with Charlotte Burchard a beautiful fiend who list us do the interview in her gorgeous home.
