Pictured above is a statue of renowned Charleston blacksmith Philip Simmons that stands in the middle of Hampstead Mall Playground.

Born in 1912, Philip Simmons started work as a blacksmith as a young man and created more than 500 pieces. His work can be seen throughout Charleston, at the Smithsonian and internationally.

Our tour, the Seven Eras of Slavery, starts with a docent-led tour of the Philip Simmons House and blacksmith workshop that highlights his incredible legacy. $5 from each tour ticket is donated to the museum to support its mission and preserve the work of a great American artist.

In celebrating , we highlight the Pollitzer sisters that called Charleston, SC home.

Carrie and Anita Pollitzer became prominent advocates of the women’s rights movement in the early 1900s. Both women were founding members of the SC National Woman’s Party and were instrumental in helping pass the 19th amendment.

Take our walking tour, The Strong Women of the South History Tour, and learn about the women of Charleston who stood up and made a difference.
