Two of our vacation homes overlook Bristol Marina, This is the dock that Dock View is named after and, has almost this exact view, and the Boathouse looks out over the top of the Marina. What a beautiful photo.
Happy spring!
I know, it doesn't feel like it. It rarely does at the start of the season here in Maine. While most of the country is turning green, we have only the slightest hints of what's to come. The sun is higher and maybe a little warmer, the days longer. Sap is surely flowing through the maples, the crocuses are up, and the daffodils have sprouted but not yet bloomed.
Those events fill me with awe and wonder every year, as does the slow unfurling of human activity on the Maine waterfront. Winter is usually my favorite season, and I've photographed the heck out of Maine in the cold and snow. But lately, as I drive through a mostly barren Cape Porpoise or gaze at the empty harbor in Camden or see that most everything is still closed in Boothbay Harbor, what comes into my mind that I really want to capture photographically is the fecundity of the warmer months. Perhaps I'm getting old.
I journeyed to Boothbay this morning and found the schooner Isaac H Evans resting on the pier at Bristol Marine Shipyard. It was uncovered and pointed out to sea, looking eager to venture out with loads of happy tourists. Still, a few pieces of docking were piled up on the pier, and the outer harbor was completely vacant. But, I know it will soon to be filled with boats of all kinds, and this lovely view out past Tumbler Island to Burnt Island, it's beautiful lighthouse, and beyond will be mostly obscured. Such is the tradeoff we face each and every year.
I look forward to getting back here soon and I think I'll be spending quite a bit of time here this summer, building out a new body of work in this area that is closer to my new home, and that I haven't explored too much in my photography career. Getting out on the water, visiting with my friend Bob Krist, and looking for adventures and photographic opportunities ranging from Ocean Point to Newagen are all on the list of things to look for as we move into the warmer months. Maybe I'll see you out here!
