Oh Happy Day! I’m coming to you from beautiful Montenegro. Say where??

Our next Roam by Mangata adventure, a chartered yacht sailing through the Croatian Adriatic (anybody see Below Deck?), kicks off Friday with 18 women from across the US, ranging in age from 25 to ‘it’s just a number’. I’ve had this in the works since the inception of Roam and I’m counting down the days.

In the meantime I’ve landed a week early in Montenegro, Croatia’s up and coming next-door neighbor. I’m working remotely, staying at a variety of hotels and meeting with tour operators and industry partners.

My current office view? Mega-yachts off my Regent Porto Montenegro balcony. Definitely not in Durango anymore.

We had a blast at Vermejo today! 🐾

Our animal safari was like stepping into a wildlife documentary – baby buffalo, elk, and pronghorn antelope everywhere you looked. But the real stars of the show? The black bears stealing the spotlight with their surprise appearance! 🐻✨

I'm living my best life at Vermejo, a Ted Turner Reserve in New Mexico. This place has been on my list since I first heard of it and it’s exceeding my expectations, even after 1 day.

Vermejo is a 550,000-acre working cattle ranch and wildlife refuge that's home to an incredible array of plants and animals, including bison, elk, deer, pronghorn, black bears, and mountain lions. The scenery is breathtaking, with rolling hills, rugged mountains, and crystal-clear streams.

I'm staying in one of the ranch's historic lodges which is like stepping back in time. The rooms are rustic but luxurious, with wood-burning fireplaces, plush beds, and incredible views.

And the food? Amazing. Dinner was a grilled bison steak and I’m now forever ruined. Fresh, local ingredients are used to showcase flavors o the Southwest. I may be still full from dinner but I can’t wait to see what awaits at breakfast.

Activities are a major draw here which is why it’s quite popular with multi-generational travelers. Tonight we went on a sunset game drive and it definitely reminded me of Africa, a la New Mexico. The next few day my dance card is filled with horseback riding, hiking, flyfishing, sporting clays and more.

🦍 🇷🇼 🥾 👏 🤩 Gorilla day! An early start, we met at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for our briefing. The Sabyinyo gorilla family for the win, a group of 16 of all ages, considered a mid-distance trek (and I can’t imagine what a long-distance one entailed 😅). We were assigned our guide, tracker and porters, the 🦍 a-team. While porters aren’t required they’re highly encouraged and I understand why now. My porter, Stephen, carried my bag, machete’d (I know that’s not a word) our way through thickets and held my hand up and down the rocky, muddy lands. I would’ve been on my butt many times over if not for Stephen. After a couple of hours of scrambling we began to see and hear the signs of gorilla life. Distant grunts, flattened branches, muddy tracks and half-eaten leaves. We laid down our bags and trekking sticks, masked up (gorillas can catch covid) and quietly followed our guide and tracker. And suddenly - our first gorilla encounter. A silverback (male over 12) and 2 of his children playing around in their nest. After 10 minutes of watching every move (and likewise) we crawled through to another small nest, this one with mom, a baby and juveniles. And then, more and more gorillas appeared, as interested in us and we were in them. The one hour experience made every moment count. I noticed each blink, bite, grunt, stare and movement with 💯 of my focus, aware of how special this opportunity was. And then it was time to say our goodbyes. We gathered our things, slid back down the mountain mud once again and walked away with a greater appreciation for our gorilla friends.

After 3 days of city fun it’s off to Kruger National Park and safari life. A hop, skip and jump from Cape Town, we’re fully immersed in a dream environment straight out of National Geographic, the Singita Lebombo Lodge. We arrived in time for an evening safari and wow - what a great start. The highlight? This male lion that appeared out of nowhere 🦁.
