This week, I received this statement from one of my top tour operators in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area. And while I know this is a massive disappointment to clients that were looking forward to this bucket-list excursion, knowing that this company is watching out not only for my client's safety but also for the well-being of these majestic creatures reiterates the importance of really knowing the people I am doing business with.
Statement:
We have decided to suspend our whale shark observation for the remainder of the season. This year there was a change in whale shark behavior. The presence of boats caused most sharks to submerge deep and out of view, which caused a bit of a controlled frenzy between boats full of paying customers.
For those unaware, the industry standard for whale shark tours is for one snorkeler at a time to enter the water with two opportunities to attempt per snorkeler. This means that one vessel of ten snorkelers accounts for twenty submersions. When you have 50 boats all sharing one shark, we believe that the stress caused to the animal is just too much at that point.
Our logo represents a moral compass. We do not believe that withholding this information from our guests for the sake of a better bottom line aligns with our values. When an agent places their clients in our care, we understand that our responsibility is to be an extension of the standards represented by said agent.
