Motherland Travel Motherland Travel designs Heritage Journeys for families that focus on deepening family bonds.

Heritage travel for families with internationally adopted children allows families the opportunity to experience their child’s birth country, understand its people, and learn firsthand about their child’s roots. A Heritage Journey can also provide internationally adopted children the ability to see the beauty of their motherland and more importantly, to share it with their adoptive families. Being

in their birth country allows an adopted child the opportunity to be amongst (potentially for the first time) people they might resemble and with whom they share a rich cultural heritage. Simply put, recognizing that you are ‘similar to’ others rather than ‘different than’ others can be powerful in shaping a young identity. A well-planned Heritage Journey can help families connect more deeply, empower our children, build self-esteem and a positive self-identity, as well as cultivate pride in a family’s multi-cultural heritage. To find out how we can create a journey of a lifetime for your family, please contact us.

It’s a cold, snowy Sunday in Boulder and I’m dreaming of adventure!

Are you a surfer? If so, Nicaragua has some mighty fine waves. And let’s be honest, with over 300 days a year of off-shore winds, fewer crowds than its neighbor to the south and consistent waves year-round, you might wanna add Nicaragua to your list of surf trip destinations.

So … let’s do this, k?

Thinking about our upcoming Thanksgiving feast makes me dream about food from around the world!! One of my favorite things about traveling is the food and the food in Colombia was some of my fav!!

From the island fair to some of the fanciest restaurants in Cartagena, it was truly fabulous. Fresh, creative, and well prepared!
I’m a total foodie when it comes to travel and typically will try anything/everything! Is there anything you wouldn’t eat? Which country’s food do you like best? What will be on your Thanksgiving table?

Happy International Women's Day!

Happy International Women's Day!

It’s International Women’s Day and I want to honor this beautiful lady. Jac and I had the great pleasure of spending the day with her and her daughter at their home in Solola, Guatemala this past summer. She had the brightest smile, warmest heart and strongest hands of any woman I have ever met. We cooked, we ate, we laughed, we talked (through a translator - she only spoke a local dialect), she wrapped my hair in a head wrap like her own. She joyfully welcomed us into her humble home and when we departed she unwound the beautiful cinta (traditional head wrap) she was wearing and gave it to me. It was the most touching gift I have ever received! So today, on International Woman’s Day, I am celebrating love, strength, generosity, and kindness. I’m celebrating women around the globe who have so little yet give so much!

The plight of the Asian elephant is a complicated situation - it’s not as simple as just releasing the captive elephants in Thailand back into the wild. Formerly captive elephants wouldn’t be able to thrive in the wild and they would potentially be destructive to farmland and small villages. Also, Mahouts (the traditional caretaker/owners of an elephant) have to earn enough money to be able to feed and house their elephants as well as provide for themselves and their families. There are many elephant sanctuaries in Thailand working diligently to properly care for the elephant population, as well as the mahouts and their families. As tourists, we can help protect these amazing creatures by visiting a sanctuary that doesn’t allow elephant rides. Riding elephants can not only cause serious long-term harm to the elephant (their spines are not made to support the weight of humans) but it increases the likelihood of more elephants being tortured and trained to be used in the tourist industry.

Enjoy these magnificent creatures as they are. My guess is you will come to love an elephant during your time in Thailand! I certainly did!

In Somerset Maugham’s novel, “The Razor’s Edge”, Larry Darrell says, “It's easy to be a holy man on top of a mountain.”

Sounds about right but whether you want to be a holy man or a hiker in some of the most spectacular mountains in the world, Nepal is your ticket to the meaning of life!

Beautiful scenery, vibrant culture, welcoming locals, rich history and ten of the world's 14 highest mountains, makes Nepal an unbeatable destination. Aside from having a magnificent setting for hiking and mountaineering, Nepal also has some of the world's best white water rafting. Truly, you can’t go wrong planning a trip to Nepal!

Give me a shout if you want to know more!

“Over 500,000,000 plastic straws are used each day in the United States. It is estimated that more than 90 percent of trash floating in the oceans of the world is plastic. Plastic accounts as the most harmful man-made item to threatened and endangered sea turtles that are ingesting this plastic waste especially straws.

As the plastic straws travel around the ocean they break into tiny pieces that are then easily ingested by marine life. Threatened and Endangered sea turtles are greatly affected by this action. Sea turtles mistake floating plastic items for food. While plastic bags are the most commonly ingested item found in turtles, straws are a close second.

Not using or switching to earth friendly straws may seem small, but the effect on endangered and threatened sea turtles can be huge. Switching the straw may seem small on the individual level, but the impact it can have on the environment and sea turtles is huge.”

Please join me in giving up plastic straws! Together we can make a difference!

Thanks to the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles for this great explanation. If you want to learn more go to http://www.nestonline.org/plastic-straws/.
