--Sicilian Geology--

I just returned from a trip to Sicily, Southern Italy. I thought Terlingua House Friends might be interested in the geology.

The dominant force of Sicilian geology is the subduction of the African Tectonic Plate under the EuroAsian Plate. As Africa sinks down and goes under Eurasia (and Sicily) It carries water with it below the Earth's crust and into the mantle. The water (think of it in the form of minerals) lowers the melting temperature of the mantle and makes it more explosive - like shaking up a coke bottle. So the melting mantle material starts rising to the surface either mixing with, or not mixing with, the subducting plate and the earth's crust. The chemistry of what surfaces is based on the complicated melting and mixing.

The melted mantle material coming to the surface is generally referred to as basalt (buh-salt'). Basalt makes for good agricultural soils and the weathering helps to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. That removed CO2 ends up in the ocean to both increase ocean alkalinity (lower acids) and provide marine organisms the material to produce their calcium carbonate shells. a win-win thing.

I am working on a project to move West Texas basalt to East Texas leached soils to improve soil quality and as a consequence help to mitigate CO2 concentrations. The Aeolian volcanic islands and Mount Etna in Sicily are primarily basaltic, part of the trip was based on understanding both the natural chemical and physical weathering aspects of the Sicilian basalts.

The first impression was that Sicilian basaltic wines are a bit dryer than non basaltic wines. Perhaps more investigation is needed. Lipari on the Aeolian Islands is quite rural and beautiful. Taormina, near Etna, is very cosmopolitan. I recommend both.
