When you leave a campfire unattended, you risk starting a wildfire. Keep campfires small and manageable. Have a source of water, bucket, and shovel nearby at all times!

2024 Audubon Wildlife Grants- Application Period Now Open!
All applications due by Friday, December 15, 2023.
For more than 25 years, Montana Audubon's Audubon Wildlife Fund has awarded grants to individuals and organizations to support research or other activities that focus on the conservation, enhancement and public appreciation of Montana’s wildlife and natural communities.
In 2024, we will provide approximately $2,000 in total grant funds.
Preference given to projects involving nongame wildlife, from birds to invertebrates, and their habitats. We encourage proposals that emphasize the significance of the proposed project in regard to its research, educational, and/or recreational value. Preference will be given to small nonprofit organizations, research projects, and graduate students.
Grant winners will be announced in early March 2024.
Visit our website for guidelines and an application form: www.mtaudubon.org/wildlifegrants
At Rocky Mountain College, our students experience what they refer to as the "Rocky Difference." Not only do they develop a personal connection with their peers and the RMC community, but they're given the opportunity for hands-on experience to gain skills in their field right away.
RMC is unlike any other school; we recognize our students as individuals, not just numbers. Experience the Rocky Difference for yourself and visit our campus today.

It's always interesting to follow someone's life through the pages to old newspapers that the Montana Historical Society has digitized and made available to the public for free.
Today we take you to Ekalaka, in southeast Montana, where Samuel J. (S.J.) Emswiler lived. The Ekalaka Eagle makes scores of mentions about S.J., noting that from 1915 to 1919 he was a "U.S. Commissioner" who helped people establish claims to their land. The ads were published by the U.S. Department of the Interior. An ad he ran in the paper in 1917 noted that he was a notary public and did "Filings, Final and Yearly proofs. All homestead papers properly executed."
He married Pearly Freese in February 1917 in nearby Miles City.
By 1921 he was the assistant cashier for the Ekalaka State Bank, and by March 24, 1922, he was one of two directors at the bank. He also was a member of the Ekalaka Aero Club, which was looking for people to ride in a plan piloted by Earl Vance of Miles City.
Samuel and Pearl had two children who died at birth, and they raised three other boys - Adelbert Freese, Lionel Emswiler and Marion Rodney "Rod" Emswiler. All three of the boys joined the military, and S.J. was the acting treasurer of Carter County's War Chest Fund. Adelbert and Jerome died in action in WWII. Rod died in an auto accident at age 26.
In this undated photo, S.J. is standing next to his chuckwagon. He died in 1952 at the age of 71, and is buried in the Ekalaka cemetery.

The camper isn't a modern idea.
Just imagine, loading the kids and wife in a comfortable home on wheels for a weekend at the lake.
This early model camper is probably from sometime around the 1920s from the look of the film and picture quality.

Part of the great fun and interest of birding is when the unexpected shows up like a wandering migrant far from its home range, or a bird that is truly rare -- such as threatened or endangered -- a California Condor, for example. Other things that get birders talking are nature's oddities like this naturally-occurring hybrid between a cinnamon teal (Spatula cyanoptera) and a northern shoveler (Spatula clypeata) spotted recently at the Merced NWR. The observer reported scanning through many cinnamon teal and northern shovelers before finding this unique individual sporting the cinnamon-colored body of the teal and the green head, yellow eyes, and spatula-shaped bill of the shoveler. It also wears the bold white crescent shape in front of the eye like a blue-winged teal, also in the genus "Spatula." During your next visit to the national wildlife refuge, don't be so quick to dismiss that large flock of what looks like "this, that, or the other." Take some time, and you may spot the next something unexpected! Photo courtesy of Gary R. Zahm.
