Safaris are incredible. A wonderful opportunity to see animals and beautiful landscapes completely unique to Africa. But don’t forget about the vibrant, bustling cities that are absolutely brimming with activity and culture for you to take in during your visit. These 4 are just the tip of the iceberg but they could get you started!

Many visitors head to Africa for safaris and natural scenery, but its cities pulse with an urban cultural beat you'll love. Here are four spots you shouldn't miss.

Dancing In the Shadow of Giants - Rwandan culture is rich with many dances, these dancers are showing off the famed “Intore” dance. Men wear grass headdresses, making them look like lions, and women where colorful vests, sashes and reed skirts. Dance has many functions in Rwandan culture: victory in war, celebration of a birth, to honor a king or leader, celebrating a good harvest- you name it, there’s a reason to dance. “Intore” is specifically renowned for its grace and beauty and the complex drum schemes that accompany it. Here I got to see it with a fantastic backdrop of the stunning Virunga Mountains. Ntabaafrica.com

Zebra, warthogs, Thomson’s Gazelle all in one picture. You know why? Because the Serengeti is one of the coolest places in the whole world. You love nature and animals? You wanna feel like you’re living on the set of the Lion King? You need to get here. It’s truly wild and “there is far too much to take in here, more to see than can ever be seen and more to do than can ever be done”🎶 😉

Rwanda is a land of dramatic beauty. Kind people welcome you to embrace their rich cultural heritage with open arms. Known as “The Land of a Thousand Hills,” the landscape rises up to the heavens and creates massive clouds that dump tons and tons of rain onto the country, making possible the fertile landscape you can see in this picture. This was taken in a traditional village designed to bring curious travelers back to a time before every person carried a cellphone and had access to the outside world- giving a glimpse of Rwanda’s rich history and culture that revolved around the idea of a close knit community. We have some really exciting itineraries in development that I encourage anyone interested in the African continent or Rwanda to take advantage of. There is no place in the world like Rwanda and the warm people of Rwanda are truly one of a kind.

Let’s talk Namibia. This is a destination unlike any other in world. With crystal clear night skies, unimaginably enormous sand dunes, and beautiful African wildlife that is uniquely specialized for life in the harsh Namib and Kalahari deserts. Not to mention the beautiful and romantic town of Swakopmund. Namibia is still gaining ground in terms of tourism, with higher numbers every year. This is a really, really exciting destination.

I was lucky enough to get to dance with the Maasai in a village outside of Tarangire park in Tanzania. The Maasai are one of East Africa’s smaller ethnic groups but due to their openness to outsiders and their unique cultural heritage they are probably the most represented ethnic group in media about the region. This dance is primarily stomping your feet and jumping as high as you can to the drum beat and “whoops!” of the people around you. It was a lot of fun but man I only did it for about two minutes and I was outta gas afterward. These people are in phenomenal shape.

The black rhino is truly one of the most exciting creatures you can see in the African bush. They are critically endangered and as such they are the focal point of a plethora of conservation efforts. Their primary threat, as most of you know, is poaching for their horns- highly prized for their supposed medicinal effects, primarily in China. These keystone species face a number of challengers in the coming years and it’s going to take all of our effort and ingenuity as humans to preserve these wonderful animals for future generations. This particular rhino, in the Ngorongoro crater is never without his trusty guards- brave men and women willing to lay down their lives for the prosperity of this extremely fragile animal population. It’s really a treat to see one- especially this close.

The slender mongoose is pretty common across sub Saharan Africa but they’re pretty small and do well blending into their environment with their reddish brown fur. This little one was perched on a branch right alongside of the road in Tarangire National Park, Tanzania. Like most mongoose, the slender mongoose is more than capable of killing and eating venomous snakes- but he’d prefer to just find an already dead animal or some insects to grub on; it’s just a bit easier.

Ahh the olive baboon. Probably the most irritable of our primate cousins. Typically these guys live in large groups, troupes, with their family and friends. They’re pretty good at delegating responsibilities to the individuals in the group. This one seems to have been tasked with sentry duty, keeping an eye out for opportunistic predators like lion, cheetah, leopard or hyena. He seemed bored and quite irritated with his supervisor- but who isn’t. Ntabaafrica.com

The flight to Ngorongoro crater from the Serengeti is almost as beautiful as the places themselves. Seeing the African savannah from a birds eye view not only challenges your perspective but also gives you a chance to really take in the vastness of this ecosystem. Plus elephants and giraffes are so huge you can still see them from the sky. This was really a unique experience- come have your own with Ntaba African Safaris ntabaafrica.com @ Tanzania

Shout out to Emmanuel, our fantastic guide through the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. After explaining how gorillas like to chow down on the leaves of the eucalyptus tree- and a healthy bit of convincing- I decided to give the jungle cuisine a shot. It’s not delicious for us humans 🤦‍♂️ but hey you gotta try new things right. Come have your very own once in a lifetime experience with Ntaba. Visit ntabaafrica.com or shoot me message. BIG BOY munching on some leaves in the Virunga Mountains. He wasn’t exactly thrilled to have us there, but he begrudgingly humored us and our cameras. At one point he gave the group a startle when he charged and beat his chest- but he was a big ol softie in the end. Ntabaafrica.com

The hills of Rwanda are really one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. The way they rise into the sky, watching over this quietly gorgeous country. It is sometimes surreal looking over them towards the west, as just on the other side of these highlands lies the Congo- a place plagued with troubles since their colonization by Leopold II’s Belgium. It’s easy to forget that, in these places of tragedy also lies immense beauty, we just have to lay aside our greed and arrogance in order to work together to right the wrongs of the past and work towards a greater future together.

To me, there’s nothing scarier or more impressive than an apex predator that has retained its same form since the K2 extinction event. Crocodilians are perfectly suited for killing in their environment. They can move silently beneath murky waters. Their tough hide and immense size leaves them virtually invincible from any predation- unless they’re somehow flipped on their back, exposing their soft belly. They are truly impressive animals- always best viewed from a distance though. Ntabaafrica.com

You know, these little dudes don’t get enough love. Sure, they may not be the prettiest animals in the savanna. They’re not as graceful as leopards, the don’t command the same respect as lions, they aren’t quite as smart as elephants. But they are entertaining and endearing, and they know how to work together! When walking through tall grass they stick their tails straight up in the air, like an ugly flagpole, so their buddies can follow them. They may not be as fast as a cheetah but they’re certainly more agile. Don’t get it twisted, the humble warthog is no easy meal. He might just be my favorite critter of the African savanna.
