As you may know, I'm lucky enough to be in Europe this October, and I'd love to make the most of it.

Do I need to speak the language of the country to travel there?

Technically, no.
Is it a good idea to attempt to learn a few phrases? Yes.

In all major European cities, English is widely spoken, read, and understood; the language of aviation is English; all pilots (regardless of where they are in the world) must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. 99% of airports have signs in the native language and English.

If you're not with a group, I'd suggest an English-speaking country, like the UK. It helps with language barriers and calms your nervousness.

People are traveling again. Lots of people. There is always that one traveler with the oversized bag who has to rearrange things at the counter while everyone sits and waits.

Don't be like that.

Self cleaning toilets in France? Yep.

During our travels this summer, we were able to spend a few hours in Montmartre, check out the sites, grab some goodies to snack on and hang out in the area.

This is where we discovered the self-cleaning toilettes. I was confused. Dumbfounded. Shocked. I wasn't the only one who was confused either.

There were 5 people in line. 4 of us had no idea how to use the self-cleaning toilette. The one person in line who was familiar, spoke a language that the other 4 of us did not understand, but we were all determined to understand what he was telling us.

Eventually, half the line split up because it was slow moving; I went to the pastry shop across the street, others decided to go elsewhere.

But I did learn that day that there are self-cleaning toilettes around the city.

Anyone else experience this?

I HATE BEING HOT!

Oh boy, I can't stand the feeling of being sweaty and uncomfortable when traveling to those hot and sunny destinations.

It's like an endless battle with the sun!

But I've picked up a few personal tricks. First, I always pack light, breathable clothes to keep cool. A wide-brimmed hat is a lifesaver too.

And here's the real game-changer: plan your activities for the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or evening. That way, you can still enjoy your trips without feeling like you're roasting.

Trust me, it works wonders!

We are still anxiously waiting on her passport to arrive.

Did you know you can call your state congressman to help you get your passport processed if you are due to travel internationally soon and your passport has not arrived?

Yes!

Here's what I've learned so far:

-it is your congressman that can help you (not state representative)
-call your congressman's office to find out what their process is
-be prepared to call back 15 days before travel for them to get to work on your behalf.

We are checking the mail daily here-- and hoping that we do not have to call our congressman's office on 9/15, but if the golden ticket doesn't arrive by then, I'll be on the phone first thing in the morning!

Anyone have experience with using your congressman's office to help move the process along a bit quicker?

1. Before I go on a trip, I enjoy cozying up with a good book about the destination's culture. It's like a sneak peek into the lives of the people I'll meet.

2. I firmly believe there's no such thing as a silly question when you're in a new place. I ask all sorts of questions, from "What's the proper way to greet someone here?" to "Can you teach me a local phrase?"

3. Learning a bit of the local language is like a little love letter to the place you're visiting. It shows you care about connecting on a deeper level.

Remember, it's all about creating personal connections with the destination's culture.

It's like making a new friend in every place you visit.
