Congrats to two of our brilliant engineers! Chelsea Olcese, Engineering Manager, and the late Randy Lamie, Staff Engineer, were recently awarded a patent for an innovative process related to paper container adhesives. Their work will help us continue finding alternative coatings for more sustainable cups.

Randy’s daughter, Megan Goodrich (left, with plaque), who also works here at Dart on coatings development, accepted the patent on his behalf. In addition to his two patents and many inventive ideas, we remember Randy for his curiosity and kindness. A big thanks to Chelsea (right, with plaque) and Randy for this new process and for all their important innovations in product development and testing!

At Dart, one way we demonstrate our commitment to safety is by encouraging as many of our employees as possible to take part in free first-responder training.

The training, which teaches CPR and first aid, showed its exceptional worth recently at our production facility in Leola, PA. Trained first responders quickly answered the call when coworkers discovered Lead Maintenance Mechanic Bruce Jones unresponsive on the job due to a medical emergency.

The first responders delivered CPR until 911 personnel arrived. Bruce remained unresponsive for several days and in the hospital for several weeks, but – as he began to recover – his mother called the plant to thank those who responded for saving his life.

Bruce got the chance to deliver a heartfelt thank you of his own after returning to the job and joining the first responders for a thank you lunch.

As a homegrown Michigan manufacturer since 1960, we were excited to once again participate in Rosie the Riveter Day!

Yesterday, a group of Dart’s own “Rosies” visited the Michigan State Capitol to remember the crucial role women played in manufacturing during World War II and recognize their continued importance in the field today.

Special thanks to Capital Area Manufacturing Council for bringing us together to celebrate women in manufacturing and skilled trades. We had a great time!

Right now, communities, facility operators, nonprofits and solid waste authorities can apply to receive up to $50,000 to expand foam polystyrene recycling.

We're excited to once again partner with Foodservice Packaging Institute's Foam Recycling Coalition on this initiative, which to date has made it possible for an additional 11 million residents across the US and Canada to have access to recycling for items like foam polystyrene cups, egg cartons, takeout containers and packaging materials!

Congrats to Luis Altamirano Paez, a Senior Process Engineer who recently earned his first patent! His groundbreaking innovation helps reduce machine downtime in our paper cup departments, transforming operations at facilities across the company.

“I’m happy that all the time invested in machine optimization has improved performance,” said Luis. “And I’m excited to receive this patent!”

Congratulations to Ladd McConkey, this year’s recipient of the Wuerffel Trophy!

For the last eight years Dart has served as a corporate partner for the award, which honors college athletes who’ve made significant contributions on and off the field.

In addition to his impressive academic and athletic stats – including graduating magna cm laude and winning back-to-back National Championships – Ladd supports several community organizations including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Elks Aidmore’s Therapeutic Foster Care program, which provides resources for foster children who’ve experienced abuse and neglect. He’s also in the UGA Leadership Education and Development program, where he regularly works within programs that address food insecurity and literacy.

As part of Dart’s sponsorship, our SOLO brand is promoting the Wuerffel Trophy on product displays in retail stores throughout the nation. The displays feature customized products in 11 different color combinations that match the colors of local teams and festively contribute to game-day gatherings.

Each year, our plant leadership from around the world gathers for a week of education and collaboration. It’s also a time to celebrate and recognize our individual and collective achievements for the year. Without further ado, here are this year’s award winners:

As we tracked our safety, quality, production and financial performance this year, Toronto stood out in every category. Congrats to Plant Manager Mark Emerson - we commend you for leading an outstanding team and keeping them focused on achieving their goals!

We kick off our annual plant competition each January and challenge sites to rise to the top against peer facilities. Facilities earn a win or a loss each month based on their performance against volume and cost targets. Kudos to our winners!

Our Owenboro plant’s milestone of 1.4 MILLION hours without a lost-time safety incident makes you sit up and take notice – even if you’re the governor of the state!

The site recently earned the 2022-2023 Governor’s Safety and Health Award by going without a lost-time safety incident between June 5, 2019, and March 31, 2023. Kentucky’s Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman and Secretary of Education and Labor Jamie Link presented Plant Manager Mitch Hertzler, Operations Manager Ross Fogle and Environmental Health and Safety Manager Nate Hopewell with the award last month.

Owensboro seems determined to keep their streak going. The facility last had a recordable safety incident of any kind on June 5, 2020, and has now gone three years without a recordable incident as of June 12, 2023.

We appreciate every employee for prioritizing safety every day. Congrats – and a big thank you – to our Owensboro team!

At Dart, we can’t stress employee safety enough. That’s why we’re so proud of our Distribution Center in Chino, CA, for going two years without a recordable safety incident.

The employees recently gathered to celebrate this important achievement and receive their well-deserved Dart jackets!

We know it takes the attention of every employee to prevent workplace mishaps and injuries. Way to stay safe, Chino. This is truly a tremendous team effort!

It’s the Dart Community Action Team program’s tenth year, and our employees have been busy! So far this year, they’ve volunteered more than 600 hours and picked up more than 6,000 pounds of trash as part of cleanup and tree planting events across the US.

Kudos to our Dart team in Dallas for doing their part to protect water quality in the Trinity River.

They recently earned the 2021-22 Blue Thumb award for achieving full compliance with pretreatment regulations. Dallas Water Utilities presents the award annually to significant industries that demonstrate outstanding compliance with its pretreatment program.

Way to go, Dallas! Thanks for helping us realize our goal to serve our customers while minimizing our impact on the environment!

For all of us at Dart, there's an opportunity - and expectation - to use creativity and strategic thinking to find new and better ways to do business. Kudos to these Lithonia, GA, employees who took that to heart, recently coming together to tackle the issue of improving raw material consistency in our products.

The diverse team was made up of inspector packers, designers, engineers, process technicians, maintenance mechanics, production and Operational Excellence managers, trainers and quality assurance staff. Their innovative work resulted in significant savings through material waste reduction - and they also gained new skills and a sense of accomplishment for the role each person played in identifying issues, brainstorming ideas and executing solutions. Way to go, Lithonia!

Fun fact: We've partnered with One Tree Planted to have a tree planted for every hour of service logged by a Dart Community Action Team member. In 2022, that equaled 1,631 trees!

Dart Forklift Operator Jonathan Oller recently presented his supervisor, Reggie Short, with the Patriotic Employer award to recognize Reggie’s support of his service in the National Guard.

Jonathan, who joined our Horse Cave, KY, facility a year ago, is a former Army Military Police Officer who has continued his service in the Army National Guard. Jonathan said Reggie not only expressed his support but went out of his way to ensure Jonathan understood Dart’s military leave policy so he could receive all the benefits available.

“The Patriotic Employer Award lets him know that I think he’s a great leader and that Dart is lucky to have him on their management team,” Jonathan said.

Jonathan and Reggie, thank you for all you do!
