And so I persevere --

Calvin Coolidge - “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more
common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education
will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The
slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

This page is kept going as a cautionary tale, informing, and educating the public about historical landmarks, protracted family legal battles, well-meaning but ultimately misguided neighbors and other interlopers, and run-away development. Goodbye Catalano Guest House of Raleigh -- Razed 8/2023 in the interest of "progress."

Catalano Guest House

No matter where I traveled, in my heart, there was always a longing for home, the literal Garden Spot of the Universe -- Raleigh, NC and after thirty-seven years in St. Pete, FL I finally made it home. Amazingly, the community welcomed me back with open arms, and I have found myself surrounded by incredible support for my writing, art, and especially for my efforts to preserve Catalano Guest House, formerly the B. Richard Jackson House, a Raleigh MCM (Mid Century Modern) landmark. Once the B. Richard Jackson House, this 1953 MCM Bungalow, was designed by renowned Architects Eduardo Catalano and Horatio Caminos, and built with the blood, sweat and tears of graduate students from the NCSU School of Design in concert with local builder Ed Richards. It was created as a prototype funded by a competitive grant from Carrier Corporation to demonstrate that air conditioning could be viable in a moderately priced home. Yes, the democratization of A/C started at my place. Eduardo Catalano is best known for designing the Julliard School of Music, NYC, and the American Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Horatio Caminos is best known for his work with WHO, sharing what he learned about self-organizing, and organic quasi-urban design from the third world Just as a poem, a short story, or a photograph captures a brief moment in time, so does this unique example of MCM Architecture. This journey has been a profound perspective-changing experience. So grateful, am I to share this treasure which was once available only to a few elite, Modernist enthusiasts, with the traveling public. Truly a dream come true. What a wonderful homecoming, a newfound purpose, and my drive to create on so many different levels has come alive as a result. True happiness starts with loving where you are, and wanting to share that joy with others.
