I've been exploring southern New Mexico and will share some images and history of lesser-known locales. In the mid-1800s, the Gila River was a major route westward to California for the U.S. Military, the short-lived Butterfield Stage Company, and "single jackass prospectors." This thin riparian route offered firewood, shade, browse for animals, and life-sustaining water across the desert southwest landscape.
