I've been exploring southern New Mexico and will share some images and history of lesser-known locales. In the mid-1800s, the Gila River was a major route westward to California for the U.S. Military, the short-lived Butterfield Stage Company, and "single jackass prospectors." This thin riparian route offered firewood, shade, browse for animals, and life-sustaining water across the desert southwest landscape.

The tracks of the historic Camino Real cross the Jornada del Mu**to, a 90-mile section of desert with scarce water in central New Mexico. I just returned from Canyon de Chelly, guiding a group of 10. The trip included a Ranger talk about the importance of the Diné (Navajo) home, called a Hogan, and a 4x4 trip within the canyon's red sandstone cliffs. 1950s image of home life shown here.

I caught this cloud formation on I40 while driving towards Laguna Pueblo. It had rained before sunrise in the Zuni mountains and Grants, NM; beautiful rain burst as I approached Laguna, but I couldn't catch it from the freeway.

These Apache images were removed from the Catholic Church in Mescalero reportedly by the priest who stated "You can't be Catholic and Apache (spiritually). They've been returned and hope the priest shown the reservation boundary.
