🏞️ Earlier this week, Jeff Schill captured an incredible sight near Marblehead Lighthouse State Park - nine bald eagles all in one place! At one point, he counted as many as 11 bald eagles soaring and perching in the area. 🦅

Ohio’s natural beauty never ceases to amaze us, and we’re so lucky to share our state with such magnificent wildlife. Thank you, Jeff, for sharing this unforgettable moment with us!

A desert seems like the last place anyone would expect to find shrimp, but they are here. In fact, Triops shrimp have been around Carlsbad and similar areas for at least 200 million years! To live that long as a species, you need to be hardy.

But what are they exactly? The most anyone may have seen or heard of these critters may have been in these toy kits where they were marketed as dinosaur shrimp that hatch when you just add water. Their name comes from the fact that they have three eyes, which is what Triops means in Greek and they're crustaceans like crabs or lobsters.

What truly makes them survivors is that their eggs can stay in suspended development when dry and will only hatch when there is enough water for them to swim. On top of that, the eggs can survive for 16 hours in temperatures up to 208°F, which is all the more impressive given that they only live in temporary pools to avoid being eaten by animals like fish.

So if you see prehistoric looking creatures in a puddle that only appeared the day before, you're not going crazy. You're just seeing some of the last living remnants of ages long gone.
