When Ken Riege, General Manager of the Comfort Suites in Gallup, found out that Rand McNally was hosting a contest to select America’s Most Patriotic Small Town as part of their “Best of the Road” series, he decided to nominate Gallup. Gallup rallied behind Ken's effort, voting daily, but ultimately coming in 2nd to Mandan, North Dakota. However, the top communities from the first phase of the competition were also asked to submit a 600-word essay and a 3-minute video. With the help of friends from the UNM-Gallup English Department, a local videographer, and Medal of Honor recipient, Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura, Ken wrote an essay and compiled a video.

Gallup won. The following year, Rand McNally decided to discontinue the contest, leaving Gallup to hold the title indefinitely.

In 1951, Menless C. Winfield began mining turquoise at the Villa Grove Mine, in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. For 70 years, the Winfield family supplied Native American craftsmen with the silver, turquoise, and other materials necessary for the creation of their art. They purchase most finished products directly from craftsmen, represented by many tribes: Apache, Cheyenne-Arapaho, Hopi, Navajo, Santa Domingo, and Zuni. Their Turquoise Vault is one of the largest collections of turquoise, gathered and mined from around the world. Artists source turquoise from Winfield and collectors/museums shop at Winfield.

Winfield Trading Co., open Monday-Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm by appointment only.
