We canoed and kayaked from one live music performance to the next. We were pirates. We were paddlers. We were likeminded people who stepped away from day-to-day life to live in the moment.

The inaugural Paddle Happy: Schuylkill, presented with Explore Schuylkill, wrapped up this weekend. We paddled Southeast PA’s Schuylkill River, entertained by local musicians at each stop and returning to a comfy basecamp each night.

The Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s WWII Air Show delivered a dazzling spectacle in sky above us. Fun, splashy drops and easy rapids entertained us on the water. We explored a beautiful river corridor, utterly invisible to the suburbia nearby.

We made new friends. We reconnected with old ones. We gave tight bear hugs. We introduced new adventurers to the things that make a big river trip so magical.

Paddle Happy trips distill everything our team at Bad Adventures has learned about making a big river adventure meaningful. Join us on the Schuylkill next year. Opening night is May 30, 2024.

Undertaking a challenging trip with likeminded adventurers is meaningful and deeply satisfying. We support each other. We look after each other. We celebrate each other.

Last year we began an adventure to paddle all 444 miles of the Susquehanna, the longest river on the East Coast. Over 3 years, for 9 days each year, we’re conquering this paddler’s right of passage.

On Sunday, we completed the Headwaters leg, paddling among quiet rolling hills and pastoral landscapes of New York’s Southern Tier. Our plastic navy—a flotilla three dozen boats strong—visited crossroad communities, sleepy villages, and bustling Binghamton.

308 miles down. 136 miles to go.

On our Susquehanna 444: Headwaters paddling adventure, we depart the picturesque village of Cooperstown, home to Lake Otsego and the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Susquehanna River is a mere trickling path through woodlands of Upstate New York that leads us under century-old bridges that connect farm communities and sleepy tourist towns. Oxbow after oxbow usher us through shallow valleys that feel a world apart from the Chesapeake Bay, 444 miles downstream.
