Now available: Private Tour Guide In Northern Michigan
Fall colors are starting, and now is the time to book author and speaker Capt. Dan Farrow (ret) for your private tour around Northern Michigan.
A retired Merchant Mariner Captain and Instructor, his knowledge of the area's history, landmarks, and amazing rockhounding opportunities allow you to design your own memorable and entertaining tour.
As a local, he knows when and where the fall colors are at their peak, and can drive you through the world-famous Tunnel of Trees.
If you like history, he can provide a tour of the area's Hemingway landmarks; sawmill and railroad sites; and King Strang's Mormon Kingdom, the only kingdom ever established within the United States.
If you want to find Petoskey stones and other fossilized corals, conglomerates like the pudding stone and gowganda tillites, jaspers, quartzites, lightning stones, and maybe - just maybe - an agate, he's spent years identifying the best public spots, and has access to private land rich in pudding stones and fossils. He'll take you to the right place for the specimens you want. Thanks to both the Devonian Age bedrock, now exposed, and recent glacial events, this area - and in particular, the Lake Huron side - is rockhounding heaven. Be prepared to walk on sunny, sandy beaches with a lot of shiny, wet rocks along the waterline... you can pick them up and take them home, up to 25 lbs. per year. Bring a bag.
Details: $20 per hour, 4-hour minimum. Maximum: he's worked a lot of long watches, and still can
Vehicle: Your vehicle. His jalopy used to be a Designated Driver vehicle, and it's retired, too. He has a current Michigan Chauffeur license, and can drive - or just navigate / narrate.
How many people can we have in our group? As many as can legally fit in your vehicle, with seatbelts.
Are you safe? I operated the Boyne Area Designated Driver program in Boyne City with the full knowledge and cooperation of law enforcement. After three years, and after training a lot of drivers, I was getting burned out; I wanted my weekends back, too. I also wrote and published a book on safe driving techniques. No DUI's, etc.
Sodalites? There's a lot of interest in the recent discovery of sodalites on our beaches (they glow brightly under UV light). I don't do night-time hunting for sodalites: I will refer you to other experts on that.
Wine Tours? I don't offer wine tours specifically (I did a few a long time ago). If your group wants to stop at a winery, my experience as a designated driver is available. There are a number of wine tour hosts available in Traverse City.
