🍔🎶 Fun Fact About "Cheeseburger in Paradise" 🎶🍔

⛵After sailing in rough weather and dwindling provisions, Jimmy Buffett was dreaming of a hot cheeseburger. Pulling into a new marina in Road Town, Tortola, the crew headed to the restaurant which surprisingly offered an American cheeseburger. Although not as the song described, the cheeseburger was from Heaven according to Buffett’s account in the Parrothead Handbook.

🇻🇬Village Cay Marina opened in 1974, and the song Cheeseburger in Paradise debuted in 1978. Coincidence? We think not.🍹🌴

🦜Parrothead Handbook Account:
“The myth of the cheeseburger in paradise goes back to a long trip on my first boat, the Euphoria. We had run into some very rough weather crossing the Mona Passage between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and broke our new bowsprit. The ice in our box had melted and we were doing the canned-food-and-peanut-butter diet. The vision of a piping hot cheeseburger kept popping into my mind. We limped up the Sir Francis Drake Channel and into Road Town on the island of Tortola where a brand new marina and bar sat at the end of our dock like a mirage. We secured the boat, kissed the ground and headed to the restaurant. To our amazement we were offered a menu that featured an American cheeseburger and piña coladas…we gave particular instructions to the waiter on how we wanted them cooked, and what we wanted on them—to which very little attention was paid. It didn’t matter. The overdone burgers on the burned, toast buns tasted like manna from Heaven, for they were the realization of my fantasy burgers on the trip. That’s the true story. I’ve heard other people and places claim that I stopped or cooked in their restaurants but that is the way it happened.” Jimmy Buffett

🐌 Fun Facts About Snails! 🌿

1. Snails are mostly nocturnal, coming out at night to avoid the sun and stay hydrated. Moving at a leisurely pace, around 0.03 mph, makes them one of the slowest animals on Earth. Snail slime isn’t just goo—it helps them glide smoothly over surfaces and even climb vertical walls!
2. Some snails have both male and female reproductive organs, making them hermaphrodites.
3. They can live in forests, deserts, and even the ocean—there are over 60,000 species of snails! Some snails can live for 5-10 years, depending on the species.

⛵️ Fun Facts About the Leopard 47 Catamaran! ⚓️

1. The Leopard 47 was built by Robertson & Caine in Cape Town, South Africa. Originally, these iconic catamarans were commissioned for the Moorings fleet in the British Virgin Islands. Once completed, delivery captains sailed them across the Atlantic to their new home. Today, new Leopards are shipped over on container vessels.

2. The Leopard 47 is one of the few catamarans that excels at sailing close to the wind, allowing it to make impressive forward progress even at 35° angles to the wind. Many captains praise its remarkable upwind performance, highlighting it as one of the best in its class for precision sailing.

3. The Leopard 47 features straight prop shafts, which require less maintenance than the more popular sail-drive systems. The propellers are positioned in front of the rudders, allowing the catamaran to "walk" sideways within its own footprint—perfect for tight marina maneuvering or when precision is key.

🚤Our Refurbished Dinghy is Ready to Serve!🌊
Our newly upgraded dinghy is all set to shuttle guests to and from the beach, restaurants, and prime snorkeling spots. With brand-new tubes, engine, and flooring, it's built for comfort and reliability.

❓Why is it our dinghy named "Gore"?
The name "Gore" comes from the original Florida registration number (FL-8560RE). When stenciled onto the dinghy's tubes, it looked like "GORE." Given the dinghy’s rugged durability, the name felt like a perfect fit for such a tough, dependable vessel.

🌀Final Hurricane Off-Season Update🔚

🌧️ As hurricane season draws to a close, it’s been a wet week in the Caribbean, with some intense squalls rolling through. During one particularly strong gust, a neighbor’s dinghy got loose and drifted past us, so we made sure to return it to its grateful owner. 🛶

🇸🇽 With our time in St. Maarten winding down, we took full advantage of our final days by stocking up on items we can’t find in the Virgin Islands and savoring one last decadent French dinner. 🥐

⛵ At sunrise, we fired up the engines and pointed the bow west. The uneventful 13-hour motor turned into a beautiful ride, with Kuma Too gracefully surfing down 4-6 foot waves as we arrived in the British Virgin Islands just after nightfall. 🇻🇬

📝 In a pleasant surprise, our annual renewal process for work permits and residence status in the BVI went off without a hitch—meaning the official start of our 2024/2025 season is here! 🏁

♨️ To celebrate, we joined friends at our local Watering Hole for a braai while watching the England vs. South Africa rugby match—an exciting game with South Africa taking the win. 🇿🇦

🌀Off-Season Updates - Week 17⏳

✨ Upgrades in Progress!
🛶 Our dinghy is getting a complete makeover, but we're keeping the details under wraps for now—trust us, it'll be worth the wait!

💦 The watermaker has had a hardware upgrade to keep the fresh water flowing strong for all our charter guests.

🛒 We've been on a treasure hunt across St. Maarten and St. Martin, picking up all the essentials we need for our annual refresh.

🌯 Amidst all the shopping, we discovered Wonderfood Sxm - delicious bites with a local twist! Afterward, we squeezed in a Happy Hour watching planes land then indulged in more moutherwatering dishes with Stray Shower Charters ✈️

🌀Off-Season Updates - Week 16🤸🏻‍♀️

🇱🇨 With winds fluctuating between 0 and 15 knots, we set sail towards Antigua, embarking on our first adventure on the windward side of the Lesser Antilles. We watched a stunning sunset behind Dominica before the skies darkened and the stars began to shine brightly!🌟

🇦🇬 Just a few hours out of Antigua, we received an updated weather report that prompted us to adjust the sails on Kuma Too. A cold front crashing down from the North Atlantic was set to arrive in two days, bringing rough sailing conditions for the week ahead. While we could easily hunker down in Antigua, we had to reach St. Maarten by the start of next week. With the weather dictating our plans, we fell off the wind, eased the sails, and mentally prepared ourselves for an additional 12 hours at sea.🌊

🌅 As sunset approached, we reduced sail to navigate around building squalls. The closer we got to St. Maarten, the choppier the seas became, leading to a good bit of rocking and rolling. Our arrival at 1am was cause for celebration, which we did with turkey sandwiches and hot showers before collapsing into bed.😴

🇸🇽 The highlight of our early arrival to St. Maarten was pulling in next to our dear friends on Stray Shower Charters ! Bill and Tamii had a delightful surprise for us—fresh French pastries and coffee waiting on our swim step when we awoke! We've cherished the last few days spent together, juggling boat projects and island errands.🥐

Our favorite memories included: Anegada, Smugglers Cove, naming the turtle by W***y T's "Floyd" and everything in between.

Our recommendation is to go slow and easy on the drink of the day (they are delicious)! Eat everything, savor the days and take every second in.
