Taormina, Sicily was founded at the behest of Dionysius the Tyrant of Syracuse in 392 BCE. The history of this magical village lives on today with the Greek-Roman theatre, perfectly preserved Mediaeval streets and dramatic views of smoking Mt. Edna and the Mediterranean Sea. Of course it’s Sicily - so great food and wine, hospitable culture all make Taormina a must visit destination.

Our captain navigated us very close to the impressive Hubbard Glacier. 75 miles long! Seals lounging on ice flows, whales cruising alongside. Spectacular day is the last in our cruise. Alaska is a must see!

The Juneau Raptor Center (JRC) is a volunteer, non-profit organization serving Southeast Alaska since 1987. JRC provides medical care to over 150 sick and injured raptors and other birds each year. JRC also delivers educational programs, featuring non-releasable birds, to local and regional groups, teaching audiences of all ages the basics of conservation.

Le Marais is the closest you will get to the feel of medieval Paris and has more pre-revolutionary buildings and streets left intact than any other area in Paris. Before Napoleon showed up the Marais is what most of Paris looked like--- a labyrinth of cobblestone alleys. The rest of Paris was razed by Napoleon and Haussman who built huge avenues and gigantic squares such as the Place Concorde. In the Marais we are privy to the small and approachable Paris of the past, the place to wander in maddening circles and never find your way. The Marais is also the most famous Jewish quarter in Paris and in much of Europe, still maintaining strong traditions.

Throughout history, the Persians, Portuguese, Omani and British have fought to control Zanzibar, the gateway to mainland East Africa and inhabited by Indians. The Sultanate of Omani was the first to trade slaves, cloves and ivory from East African Mainland.

The buildings of the Stone Town, made of coralline ragstone and mangrove timber, reflect a fusion of Swahili, Indian, Arab and European influences. “Zanzibar” doors - flat for Arab, round for Indian. The spikes are meant to keep elements away. The Anglican Cathedral is built on the site of the last slave market and commemorates David Livingston for abolishing the slave trade. Stone town is the site where slave-trading was finally terminated.

A visit to where spice happens - the spice farm! Huge tropical jungle that smells incredible. If you love food, then you’re going to love Zanzibar. Everything tastes better with excellent spices, we went crazy over the black pepper like we’d never had it before. Spices so fragrant it makes food absolutely delicious. Also known as the Spice Island, Zanzibar is home to spices like nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper. These spices and herbs were originally brought to the island by Portuguese traders who settled here in the 16th century. We were officially crowned the king and queen of spice!

Zanzibar! Incredible history here, this beautiful island sits just off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Took a short boat ride to Prison Island, now sanctuary to giant tortoises. Over 200 roam freely here. They love a massage and stand up high and stretch their necks when you oblige. I was obsessed with these amazing gentle creatures.

Safari Day 2 - Serengeti. So many LIONS! They are not bothered by our presence just a few feet away. We were very nervous when our guide changed a flat tire on the safari vehicle just 20 ft away from a young male lion. He moved into a hunting position and we held our breath. Each day brings the most exciting adventure!

Went to Bordeaux Wine Heaven today, they call it La Cité du Vin! Had a fabulous lunch at Restaurant 7, on the top floor of this magnificent shrine to Bordeaux wines. Wonderful sommelier, my only regret was not trying ALL the wines! After lunch we we loved the exhibition currently on display. A perfect Bordeaux day!

Ever wonder what it’s like inside of a working lighthouse? The Cordouan Lighthouse is an
active lighthouse 7 km at sea, near the mouth of the Gironde estuary in France. It was listed as a historic monument in 1862, and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2021. At a height of 221 ft, it is the tenth-tallest "traditional lighthouse" in the world. This Renaissance masterpiece was built in 1584 first lit in 1611. Passing ships paid two groats to pass - the first known instance of lighthouse dues. You can visit the lighthouse on a short drive from Bordeaux.
