I always say you won’t know what all we’ll see on a tour, and this afternoon we were thrilled when a fawn, still covered in spots, calmly grazed about twelve feet from us. Oh my goodness! We were all in love.🥰

If you’ve taken my tour you know that Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward would visit Aiken because her mom lived here. And I do share how he wanted to be a pilot but couldn’t. Well, here’s the more about his military experience . . .

Taking myself on a historic tour out of town, I went to Montgomery, Alabama to search for the graves of Alfred Dexter and Sarah Williams Dexter. After marrying and Alfred designing our town, they moved to what is now Montgomery to farm cotton and help his father with designing Montgomery. Alfred was helping survey for a railroad in New Orleans, LA when he contracted yellow fever which eventually took his life at the age of 43. Sarah stayed in Montgomery and eventually passed away at 74. Both are buried with two of their children, Lucy and Harrietta who died way too young; 2 & 3, and Alfred's sister, Charlotte. The cemetery itself was created from land donated by Alfred's father Andrew. It's a beautiful resting place, Well, as beautiful as a cemetery can be.

While on a tour, since you’re not driving, you’ll get to see beautiful and unique sights. Here, we have a gate post with colored slate for its peak. The only place you can quarry colored slate is upstate New York and it was brought here specifically for the home’s roof. Driving through the horse district we saw one of our four-legged citizens looking oh so stately. Schedule your tour and let’s see what we discover together!

“It was the largest invasion ever assembled, before or since, which landed 156,000 Allied troops by sea and air on five beachheads in Normandy, France. D-Day was the start of Allied operations which would ultimately liberate Western Europe, defeat N**i Germany and end the Second World War.”(Library of Congress)

Thank God for men and women who fought the valiant fight.

Yesterday’s rain showers produced a rainbow over the thoroughbred training track and only slightly slowed down the progress of the steadfast workers freshening up the county courthouse. I swear there’s beauty all around Aiken.

First things first. One must watch Aiken’s Memorial Day Parade before touring, and today’s did not disappoint. My heart goes out to the families and friends who’s loved ones gave their lives for freedom; and my deepest appreciation goes out to the men and women who so valiantly paid the ultimate sacrifice that others - we might live in a free society. God bless them all.

Saturday, May 18, I took the time and treated myself to the Aiken Garden Tour and I was not disappointed. To begin with, for eleven years I’ve shown off Joey Cottage but have never had the good fortune of visiting the residence. The cottage grounds were part of the tour and to say I was thrilled is an understatement. Imagine me, walking in the footsteps of William C. Whitney, his wife Edith, and Gloria Vanderbilt (when she was a child). Combine that with the beauty of the flora and architectural details of this magnificent home, well, the day was made perfect.

Touring today I encountered a first for me: a hawk resting on the watering trough behind the county museum. A blue jay was clearly upset with this majestic bird but it was like the jay didn’t even exist for the hawk. He/She just stayed put looking at everyone passing by.

Good Friday was a blessed day and one with more exciting sights for our tours. We observed St. Mary’s Help of Christians Catholic Church hold what appeared to be a reenactment of Christ’s crucifixion. By the county Historic Museum we saw a line of horse trailers and some riders in the horse district with their trusty steeds. I can’t wait to see what we see today!🤗
