Fujian Province, nestled along China’s southeastern coast, is a treasure trove of maritime heritage, vibrant traditions, and heartfelt hospitality. What makes it stand out from other places? For Samantha Chen, a Fuzhou native and former WildChina intern, it’s the intricate beauty of Quanzhou’s flower crowns, the nostalgic warmth of Fuzhou’s ding bian hu, and and the delightful flavor and springy texture of handmade fishballs.

In our latest article, Samantha takes us on a journey through the traditions that make Fujian truly special.

As the world starts planning for the holiday season, here's WildChina's guide on where to travel in China in summer.

For centuries, the Forbidden City stood as the heart of imperial China, where power and intrigue unfolded behind its crimson walls. Among its many stories is the tragic fate of Concubine Zhen, a young woman whose grace, intelligence, and progressive spirit captured the heart of Emperor Guangxu during the late Qing Dynasty.

Admired for her interest in art, literature, and even photography, Zhen supported the emperor’s vision for modernizing China. Yet her influence threatened Empress Dowager Cixi, the true power behind the throne. In August 1900, following the chaos of the Boxer Rebellion, foreign troops stormed Beijing, forcing the imperial court to abandon the palace. It was during this time that Zhen met her tragic end—drowned in a well within the Forbidden City. Rumors persist that Cixi ordered her death, yet the truth remains shrouded in mystery.

The well still remains within the Forbidden City, a quiet reminder of the struggles and sacrifices hidden within these ancient walls. This is just one of the many stories echoing through the palace’s history. Our local guides bring stories like Concubine Zhen’s to life, sharing the palace’s layered history and hidden tales as you explore its timeless halls.

During one of our recent meetings to reflect on the past year, our founder, Mei Zhang gathered the entire team for an insightful conversation. She posed a simple yet thought-provoking question: “When was our company, WildChina, born?”

The question, as straightforward as it seemed, sparked deep reflection. We took turns sharing our thoughts—some suggested it was when the business was officially registered, others when the idea first came to Mei, or when the first client approached us. Each answer felt close, yet they only touched the surface.

Only Mei knew the exact moment WildChina was truly born. It was the moment her heart stirred with certainty—when she took responsibility. Responsibility for another person, for the very first WildChina employee, hired even before the company had welcomed its first traveler. “WildChina was born when the first employee joined. That was the day responsibility began,” Mei shared.

It was in that act of taking responsibility for someone else’s livelihood and growth that WildChina’s work gained deeper meaning. Caring for people—both within the team and among those we serve—became the foundation of everything the company stands for. As Mei said, “No matter where you go or what you do, it’s about people."

Peking duck is a masterpiece of Chinese cuisine, perfected over centuries. The most traditional method involves inflating the duck to separate the skin from the meat, ensuring a crisp finish. It’s then glazed with maltose syrup for a golden sheen, air-dried to lock in the texture, and roasted over fruitwood for a delicate smoky aroma. Once roasted to perfection, the duck is carved tableside into thin slices and served with paper-thin pancakes, hoisin sauce, scallions, and cucumber—a perfect balance of crisp, tender, sweet, and savory in every bite.

These shots were taken during our fam trip last fall, where our guests watched the skillful slicing and serving before savoring this iconic dish. While this method is the most traditional, there are variations in how Peking duck is prepared and served. To get the full experience, our guests tried several styles, making it an unforgettable culinary highlight of their journey.

🥟Dim sum, a beloved Cantonese tradition, blossomed in the 19th century during the boom of teahouses in southern China. As workers and merchants stopped for a quick break, teahouses began offering small, flavorful snacks to accompany their tea—giving rise to the dim sum culture we cherish today.

Over time, dim sum evolved and gained prominence in Hong Kong, where the art of making these bite-sized dishes reached new heights. From there, this tradition spread across the globe, making its way into restaurants and hearts worldwide.

What makes dim sum magical isn’t just the variety of dishes, but the entire experience. The gentle clatter of bamboo steamers being stacked, the hum of lively conversation, and the anticipation as the dim sum cart rolls by, laden with delicacies waiting to be chosen—all of it comes together to create a moment that feels timeless.

What is your favorite dim sum dish? Share in the comments!

📍 Snow Town, Heilongjiang

Tucked away in northeast China, Snow Town (Xuexiang), also known as the “home of snow,” looks like it’s straight out of a winter fairytale. Just 280 kilometers from Harbin, this cozy village is made up of wooden houses decorated with strings of golden corn and red chili peppers. In winter, the snow piles up to two meters deep, covering everything in a thick, white blanket that feels magical.

As night falls, Snow Town becomes even more enchanting. Lanterns light up the snow-covered streets, casting a warm, colorful glow. The only sound you’ll hear is the crunch of snow underfoot, creating a peaceful and timeless atmosphere.

There’s plenty to do here—walk along snowy forest trails, ride snowmobiles or horses through the frosty landscape, and admire the charming cottages covered in snow.

We are excited to introduce our new expert-led journey through China, guided by New York Times bestselling author and award-winning historian, Paul French. Known for his books “Midnight in Peking” and “City of Devils”, Paul brings a unique and insightful perspective on 1920s China. In his most recent book, “Her Lotus Year: China, the Roaring Twenties and the Making of Wallis Simpson”, Paul brings Wallis Simpson’s time in China to life in vivid and unexpected ways.

In the 1920s, a young Wallis Simpson arrived in China, long before the world would know her as the Duchess of Windsor. She described her time there as her “Lotus Year,” a period clouded by rumors and the beginnings of her infamous reputation. Paul French’s book offers a fresh perspective, unveiling new insights into this mysterious chapter of her life.

This rare itinerary, inspired by Paul French’s books, traces Wallis Simpson’s “Lotus Year” while unraveling the mysteries of colonial Peking and the timeless allure of Shanghai’s Art Deco era.

Journey highlights:

🔸Stepping back into the 1920's footsteps of Wallis Simpson in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou
🔸Staying in some of China's most iconic 20th century hotels, many of which Wallis Simpson stayed in herself a century ago
🔸Immersing in two of French's other books with exclusive Paul French-led walking tours in Shanghai (Bloody Saturday) and Beijing (Midnight in Peking)

This is not simply a trip through China—it’s an exploration of character, culture, and the unexpected connections that define a place and a life. For those who seek depth, elegance, and the thrill of discovery, this journey is an invitation to see China—and Wallis—in a way few ever have.
