Very sad to hear local columnist James Gill has died. He wrote one of the best books on modern New Orleans history, Lords of Misrule, about racism in Mardi Gras. He will be missed.
James Gill, who employed his acerbic wit to skewer politicians and stuffed shirts alike in a local newspaper column for 38 years, died Tuesday, just days after suffering a cardiac

Feeling old because my favorite song 'Say It Ain't So' by Weezer is 30 years old this year, and even 'Mr. Brightside' is 20! The Killers are at Jazz Fest this year - let's get nostalgic together.

Sister Gertrude Morgan (1900-1980) was a self-taught African-American artist, musician, poet, and preacher who gained critical acclaim for her folk art paintings. Born in Alabama, she moved to New Orleans in 1939. She experienced several religious revelations throughout her life and used her artwork to aid her gospel teachings. Sister Morgan's paintings often featured religious subjects and were characterized by their simple forms and flat, two-dimensional quality. Her work was included in numerous exhibitions and she also recorded music as part of her ministry.

From the start, European literature linked witches and vampires as symbols of evil, writes Bruce A. McClelland in his dense vampire study "Slayers and Their Vampires." Both figures have long fascinated people from all walks of life. As Western society became more secular, witches and vampires started representing the negative side of Christianity. Witches are shown as completely corrupting Christian rituals, while sacred Christian symbols like crosses and holy water can defeat vampires.

Bob Dylan: “The first thing you notice about New Orleans are the burying grounds - the cemeteries - and they're a cold proposition, one of the best things there are here. Going by, you try to be as quiet as possible, better to let them sleep. Greek, Roman, sepulchres- palatial mausoleums made to order, phantomesque, signs and symbols of hidden decay - ghosts of women and men who have sinned and who've died and are now living in tombs. The past doesn't pass away so quickly here. You could be dead for a long time.”

“Times are not good here. The city is crumbling into ashes. It has been buried under taxes and frauds and maladministrations so that it has become a study for archaeologists...but it is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes than to own the whole state of Ohio.” ― Lafcadio Hearn, Inventing New Orleans: Writings of Lafcadio Hearn

You've heard of wrestling. Here's alligator fencing. En guard! Glad the big fella got free.
The alligator did have a scrape on its back but was able to be removed by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries.

She was simply the best. Today we mourn the loss of Tina Turner, whose performances of 'Proud Mary' brought the spirit of the Mississippi River to life. Her legacy will continue to roll on in New Orleans and throughout the world.

I want to take a moment to brag about this epic parallel parking job I did on Rampart Street the other day. A Jaguar was in front of me and I didn't bump it once!

Very sad news. Molly's on Toulouse and Toulouse Dive Bar are some of my favorite low-key spots in the Quarter to grab a drink.
Sad news to report: Erin Churchill, co-owner of Molly’s on Toulouse and the Dive Bar, passed away on Saturday. The Quarter Rat learned of Erin’s passing on Sunday morning by an employee…
