It was a snowy day in Nebraska but it was the perfect day to book an Alaskan cruise on the Norwegian Bliss for this coming October. It's a birthday gift for the soon-to-be 13 son. If you know me personally, I always seem to be in my car going somewhere. I love a good car trip. If it's in the continental USA, i'd rather drive there if I have the time. I had a moment in Los Angeles a few years ago where I was in a rental car in traffic and I had the thought -If someone is going to slam into me on I-5, I'd rather be in my own car.

Anyway, my mom really wanted to see one of her favorite groups, Il Volo (Italian trio), before she's not able to see them. I thought initially, we were going to have to travel to Italy. But, they are embarking on a US tour in a few weeks. I gave her the choice: California, Florida, or Chicago. She chose California. I bought two tickets to see them in Palm Springs (I didn't want to deal with traffic or parking in downtown LA)

I knew it would take 2 days to drive to California from her house. She also wanted to see Santa Fe (I've been a few times and love it.) And she also talked about seeing the Grand Canyon. Since we were in california, she also wanted to see her nephew/Godson in Orange County.

Cool. when I'm planning road trips I keep a few things in mind.
1.Budget
- know it's about $50 per tank of gas (give or take) and the car gets about 400 miles per tank. it's going to take at least 10 tanks of gas coming and going.
- I try to find reasonable hotels that are $100-150. Because the concert is taking place at a swanky casino resort, we are breaking that rule for the concert night.

2. Time. 6 hours of driving usually equates to 8 hours because of stops for bathroom, snacks, and fuel. Also, there are activities we are planning which brings me to a rule of thumb for activities.

3. Planning 1 big activity a day or 2 small activities. We are stopping in Santa Fe for 2 nights. She has always wanted to see Lorotto Chapel and I have always wanted to show her Chimayo. I know that will take up most of the day. If we get more accomplished that day, great. I like to tell people to allow a little extra time with nothing planned to allow for little discoveries. when I went to Memphis in Denver, I knew we only had time for 1 activity, it was Beale Street.

4. On driving days, only 1 activity planned. When she said she wanted to see the Grand Canyon, I asked if she wanted to devote a whole day or just stare at the hole in the ground and call it good. We only have an evening planned there. If she likes it enough, we might come back some other time.

5. Priorities
When planning, i usually ask what is the two items that are a must. Loretto chapel and the concert is a priority for her. My priority is spa.

I will charge a modest planning fee to cover my time. Together, we can figure out logistics and time requirements for driving, activities, and more.

I have several old videos on my pocket cam. Speaking of service... this is one of the bartenders on Holland America's Koningsdam from my Alaska Cruise back in June. Want an Alaskan cruise that offers a bit of everything? Holland America has an amazing cruisetour that gives you the best of everything - a cruise, a land bus tour and even a train or two. Juneau, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Denali, a little taste of each. Now, I want to go back to Fairbanks. And the drink? It's part of the "have it all" package that included drinks, wifi, a shore excursion, and specialty dinning aboard the ship.

I had a huge post planned the other day about how great Disney Cruise Line is and Technology failed me in the end. But, the main reason I adore DCL and why they a great value: Their entertainment is top notch! It is so polished and plentiful. There's great entertainment around every corner on a Disney Cruise Ship. Service. If you asked me who was my server on other cruise lines, I don't remember, but I remember servers on many of my other Disney Cruise Line Ships. Beautiful Ships and Amazing private islands. I want to talk about that later. But, what other cruise ship offers Pirate Night with fireworks? Incidentally, it's "wave season" for travel agents. Almost all cruises are on sale right now.
