Lion’s Mane, one of the elder mares on Assateague Island, cooling off on a hot day by taking advantage of the ocean breeze keeping the bugs at bay and giving her a nice new hairstyle. At 29 years young, turning 30 in July, she is part of the state line band, which is seen far less than most others on the island. Although part of the Maryland herd, they can sometimes be seen crossing the border fence with Virginia. Living in a vast territory of only 4 total ponies, seeing her is always a special event.

On today’s tour, we were lucky enough to have Lightning and the rest of his band trot passed us on the beach! As he normally lives down the southern portion of Assateague Island in Maryland, he migrated north this past week, spending a few days in the developed area grazing between the state and national parks. After seeing him north yesterday, he must have walked back down south overnight, and is now returning up north. I wonder if he forgot something?? Lightning currently has the biggest band on the island, 13 total, after taking two mares and a young c**t from General Harker’s band this past week as well. Lightning has had quite the busy week, runs a tight ship, and keeps his family on the move!

Alexandria’s Angel’s nearly three week old c**t running to catch up with mom. While she was grazing alone on the dunes one evening, the rest of the band was hanging on the shoreline to escape the onslaught of bugs. The little guy couldn’t stand the pesky flies either, so he decided to leave mom and hang with the rest of his family on the beach. Clearly agitated and having separation anxiety, he kept calling to her to come over, but she was busy eating and eating. After some time, the rest of the band started to move to the dunes to eat as well, and when this little guy felt he was in striking distance of him mom, he bolted for her and seemed overjoyed to be back at her side.

Band stallion Assateague Lightning with the newest addition to his family, a young c**t born to mare Alexandria’s Angel. Young foals usually stay pretty close to mom, but on this occasion she was busy grazing on the dunes, so dad had to step in for a moment and encourage confidence in his young one.

On an overcast May morning, we ventured out to search for Dewey, the only Assateague Maryland pony with blue eyes. He was not in sight in his normal territory, but as we returned to the vehicle, he emerged over the dunes and walked past us as he made his way south down the beach, a rare sight. With 83 (and counting) ponies that roam throughout a vast ~22 miles of beach, dunes and marsh, seeing them is always a special occurrence!

Assateague Island’s newest addition taking a much needed nap on the beach after being born less than 12 hours earlier. As the sixth foal born to the Maryland herd in 2021, this little c**t brings the total population to 83. Mother Alexandria’s Angel, born in September 2017, is the only daughter of stallion Bayberry. This c**t is her first born, presumably with stallion Assateague Lightning. 2021 continues to be a busy year!

How many ponies 🐴 can you count?

At nine total, Assateague Lightning currently has one of the largest bands in Maryland, just over 11% of the total herd population. While lead stallions have pretty established territories, the 80 (and growing) Maryland ponies call home to approximately 22 miles of beach and marsh on this narrow barrier island.
