On today’s tour, we were lucky enough to have Lightning and the rest of his band trot passed us on the beach! As he normally lives down the southern portion of Assateague Island in Maryland, he migrated north this past week, spending a few days in the developed area grazing between the state and national parks. After seeing him north yesterday, he must have walked back down south overnight, and is now returning up north. I wonder if he forgot something?? Lightning currently has the biggest band on the island, 13 total, after taking two mares and a young colt from General Harker’s band this past week as well. Lightning has had quite the busy week, runs a tight ship, and keeps his family on the move!

How many ponies 🐴 can you count?
At nine total, Assateague Lightning currently has one of the largest bands in Maryland, just over 11% of the total herd population. While lead stallions have pretty established territories, the 80 (and growing) Maryland ponies call home to approximately 22 miles of beach and marsh on this narrow barrier island.
