Another beautiful winner from the Houston International Quilt Festival. This quilt by Kyra Reps of Northwood, Iowa, won THE GRACE COMPANY MASTER AWARD FOR TRADITIONAL ARTISTRY. Kyra will receive $5,000 for her original design, "Pathfinder."

About her quilt, Kyra remarked, “Every mandala is as unique as the person creating it. This quilt is made solely of turned-edge hand appliqué and each piece was individually hand sewn. I brought her to life with my free-motion quilting. Pathfinder, with all her colors and of course, her dots, just makes me happy. In a world that isn’t always so colorful, I hope you smile when you look at her, too!”

Have you ever attended the International Quilt Festival in Houston? This year's show will be held October 31 - November 3, 2024.

"Still Life," an original design, by Chen Jing of Beijing, China won
THE HANDI QUILTER BEST OF SHOW AWARD ($12,500)

Artist’s Statement: “I wanted to use silk to express a realistic still-life painting, including the picture and the frame. The realistic effect of the picture frame was achieved using embroidery by manually controlling it on a stationary machine. At the same time, I wanted to explore unique free-motion quilting to present different picture effects on the front and back of the work.”

Can you see the cats on the back?
