Our Manaslu expedition team took to the ice the last few days for technical training as they prepared for their first rotation on the mountain! The team has enjoyed great weather so far in base camp, which has offered clear views of the route ahead and the valley we climbed up from just a few days ago. Expedition leader, Terray Sylvester checked in with this dispatch from the Himalayas on September 9:

"we woke up to another beautiful, sunny morning here in base camp (4859m/15,944ft)! So, we walked back up to ‘crampon point’ at the edge of the Manaslu Glacier and spent the morning practicing technical skills on the ice cliffs there. Then we came back down to base camp for lunch and we’ve been relaxing since then! While we were training, we had fantastic views of the upper mountain and the route up to Camp 1 (5700m/18,700ft), Camp 2 (6400m/21,000ft), and on higher on the mountain."

Follow along with the team on our dispatch page! Link in bio 🔗

The Madison Mountaineering Manaslu expedition team has arrived at base camp ⛺️

Upon reaching their temporary home, clouds in the sky parted ways and revealed the summit high above – the team’s first sight of the summit on the trip so far! After settling in, the team plans to continue acclimatizing and sharpening their technical skills before leaving on their first rotation in the next few days.

More updates to come from Nepal!

Update from Nepal:

Our Manaslu team has spent the last few days acclimatizing near the base of the mountain. They’ve visited monasteries in the area, hiked into the remote Punggen Valley, and visited the scenic Birendra Lake at the terminus of the Manaslu Glacier.

The team is in great shape and they’re looking forward to moving to base camp tomorrow. After they settle in, they’ll start their technical review for their ascent of the planet’s eighth highest peak!

03/09/2024

What is it about Cho Oyu that makes it a popular first choice for mountaineers looking to break into high-altitude climbing above 8,000 meters? The 8,000-meter peak and 6th highest mountain on the planet is a great introduction to climbing above 8000 meters. Here's why:

1️⃣ It's considered the "easiest" of the 14 8,000-meter peaks. The route we climb (West Face) is relatively moderate, with only a few sections of steep rock or ice.
2️⃣ Accessibility! Rather than having to trek into base camp like other 8,000-meter peaks in the Himalaya and Karakoram, we're able to drive to base camp!
3️⃣ Excellent preparation for Everest! The climbing experience on Cho Oyu offers climbers the perfect training ground for a future ascent of Everest, which can be seen from the summit.
4️⃣ Less objective hazards: rockfall, icefall, and avalanche danger are less of a concern on Cho Oyu when compared to other 8,000-meter peaks.

We're psyched to be back in just a few short days! Let's do this.

Our Manaslu climbers visited two of the Kathmandu Valley’s UNESCO World Heritage sites today: the famous Pashupatinath temple, venerated by Nepal’s Hindu majority, and the sacred Boudhanaath Stupa, plus some of the Buddhist monasteries that surround it.

Tomorrow they plan to fly to Sama Village at the foot of Manaslu, where they’ll begin acclimatizing for their ascent of the planet’s eighth highest peak!

It's go time! Our 2024 Manaslu expedition is underway in Kathmandu.

The team has all arrived after traveling from their home countries and settled into the team hotel. With good weather, they'll fly into the Mansiri Himal part of the Nepalese Himalayas, in the west-central part of Nepal which is home to the eighth-highest mountain on the planet! Spirits and excitement are high as we prepare for the journey ahead...

We're back from the Alps after an epic week of climbing full of summits, blue skies, and good times!

In the birthplace of mountaineering, our team trained and climbed several smaller peaks around the Mont Blanc massif before setting forth up the highest peak in Western Europe. We're grateful for the opportunity to share time in these special places with incredible people!

As we near the start of our 2024 Manaslu expedition, it begs the question of how one climbs a peak like this, or any 8,000-meter peak for that matter... Every mountain presents its own challenges, and the skills needed to climb these peaks are built over time. When you join a Madison Mountaineering team you know that each climber has been specially selected for the expedition and possess the skills and experience necessary to safely reach the summit.

How to climb Manaslu:

1️⃣ Build the foundations: by climbing peaks like Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, or other glaciated peaks, you'll get a taste for mountaineering and start to learn the skills needed to climb bigger peaks around the globe.
2️⃣ Going further: continue to develop your skillset in the mountains and in higher altitude environments. Opportunities like climbing in South America, Mont Blanc, or smaller peaks in the Himalayas offer the perfect testing ground as you continue these pursuits.
3️⃣ Build the acclimatization: You've learned the skills, now it's time to test yourself at altitude. As the highest peak outside of Asia, Aconcagua is our pick for the best place to build your high-altitude experience.

Want to learn more? Our team is here to help! Reach out to our guides or staff for how to realize your big mountain dreams.

Going to Antarctica is akin to visiting another planet. At the edge of the Earth, this seemingly endless sheet of ice, so vast, incredibly remote, and one of the most untouched places on the planet. Antarctica is home to Mount Vinson and other wild adventures that few ever get to experience.

Madison Mountaineering is one of only a select few expedition operators allowed to climb in Antarctica due to our high caliber performance over the years in leading safe, environmentally responsible, and successful climbs.

3 reasons to climb Mount Vinson:

1️⃣ Mount Vinson is great preparation for Mount Everest! Not only are you placed into one of the most remote and extreme environments on the planet, but you also use some of the same mountaineering skills as you would on Everest.

2️⃣ Tick off one of the famed 'seven summits!' Mount Vinson is the tallest peak in Antarctica, a magical place, and one of the world's best-kept secrets. A mountaineering experience like none other.

3️⃣ World-class guides and crew! Our guides have unparalleled experience on Mount Vinson and regularly lead climbs on other notable peaks around the globe, like Everest, K2, Lhotse, and many more.

Join the team in our return to the ice this coming season! Reach out to our office to get signed up.

Preparing for Everest on the Ecuador Volcanoes 🇪🇨

Ecuador is an ideal training ground for building the fundamentals of high-altitude climbing! During the program, we have ample time for a technical skills review and with Quito as our base, we ascend these Ecuadorian giants and rest between climbs in Hacienda style lodges that provide an outstanding relaxation and dining experience! With significant time spent on a glacier and at altitude, climbing the Ecuador Volcanoes makes for a great place to continue on your path to Mount Everest!

Preparing for Everest on Aconcagua 🇦🇷

As the highest peak outside of Asia, Aconcagua is the perfect place to test yourself at altitude. Before one steps foot on Mount Everest, it's important to know that your body functions well at high altitudes. Our approach is to properly acclimatize and then attempt the summit with enough extra days built in for bad weather, whereas many climbers try to rush the ascent and are turned around by altitude illness or high winds that prevent reaching the summit when time is limited.

Greatly underestimated, Aconcagua is a superb choice in preparation for an expedition to Mount Everest and is Garrett Madison’s personal favorite in South America for the full expedition experience.

Preparing for Everest on Mount Vinson! 🇦🇶

Mount Vinson offers climbers an ideal training ground for a future expedition on the world's highest peak. While not the tallest, climbers will spend ample time on a glacier while climbing Mount Vinson, traveling as a rope team, ascending, and descending fixed lines. A Vinson expedition gives climbers the expedition experience necessary before going to Mount Everest, requiring climbers to be away from home for an extended period, out of their comfort zone, and having to take care of their bodies in extreme conditions.

Being on an expedition deep within Antarctica is an opportunity to experience one of Earth's most beautiful, yet extreme environments.

Climbs to get you ready for Mount Everest 🗻

Getting to Mount Everest doesn't just happen overnight. There are skills and experiences that need to be gained before stepping foot on such a formidable peak! Glacier travel, high-altitude, and expedition experience are what we look for when carefully selecting each of our team members.

Okay, but where can these skills and experiences be gained? Well, some of our favorites are:

🗻 Mount Vinson
🗻 Aconcagua
🗻 The Himalayas (Ama Dablam, Lobuche, and Island Peak)
🗻 The Ecuador Volcanoes

Our Story

Madison Mountaineering is the premier provider of high altitude expeditions worldwide, specializing in Mount Everest and K2. We also organize expeditions to the Antarctic’s Mount Vinson, the world’s “Seven Summits”, as well as unclimbed peaks in extremely remote regions.

Every year since 2014, we have led expeditions on all seven continents, including three of the highest mountains in the world. Detailed accounts of our most recent expeditions can be found in our Dispatches.

As a part of our guided climbs, Madison Mountaineering provides the education and training for climbers who aspire to become self-sufficient, aware and respectful of the local culture, stewards of the environment, and for whom safety is the number one priority in all climbing endeavors.
