We just wrapped up a special pilgrimage to England with Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Virginia. Pictures can’t do justice. Planned as a part of the Diocese’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, the purpose was simple: go on pilgrimage to England and venerate the relics of St Thomas More, the patron of the Diocese. It turned out to be an incredibly moving and powerful experience. England’s cultural DNA and underlying ethos is Catholic. The countless saints, martyrs, shrines, Cathedrals, monasteries and monuments bear witness to this. Catholicism in England is rapidly growing, and it goes without saying that the “Blood of the Martyrs is the Seed”. Bishop Burbidge asked to go to England for this very reason: St Thomas More, the great martyr and saint of the Tudor Terror, lost his life in 1535 for protecting the sanctity of marriage and not giving Henry VIII what he wanted: an annulment from his lawful wife. St Thomas lost his head and Henry got what he wanted, however Henry would go on to have five more wives, most of whom he would dispose of, and die in misery. St Thomas More on the other-hand went straight to heaven and inspired three hundred years of underground Catholicism in England, and eventually, in the New World. As the patron of the Diocese of Arlington, Bishop Burbidge led his pilgrims through the most sacred sites found throughout England, from Walsingham to Canterbury, Tyburn to Birmingham Oratory, and so many more. Daily Mass in England’s most extraordinary churches, custom curated experiences and an underlying historical narrative that brought England’s sacred history to life made this trip special. St Alban, St Edward, St Thomas Becket, St George, St Thomas More, St John Fisher, Carthusian Martyrs, St Edmund Campion, St Robert Southwell, St Margaret Clitherow and all you great saints and martyrs of Merrie England: Pray for Us!
