Love can be a dangerous game, especially amidst the untamed beauty of Yosemite. On May 28, 1871, on Mist Trail, Giacomo Campo, a San Francisco restaurateur, encountered a lady on the rickety ladder which ascended a granite wall beside the spray of Vernal Fall. A spark of something passed between them. Perhaps it was love, perhaps lust, or perhaps just the perilous allure of the falls.

From the ledge above the ladder, Giacomo offered his hand to the lady. Rejected, he stepped back to curtsy... and fate took a cruel turn. A fatal misstep sent him plummeting to the ground below, his intention silenced forever. The fall prompted the installation of safer wooden stairs and railings that summer, a somber reminder that passion can lead to a perilous end.

This Valentine’s Day, remember that some desires can lead you to the edge. At Four Season Guides, we explore the depths of nature—and human nature—with caution and respect.

It's National Draw a Dinosaur Day, but we've got one better from one of our FSG friends over on Instagram!

•We especially like the bird-like Achillobator! Although this Dino likely wasn't present in the Grand Canyon area, we can appreciate it's presentation here, inspired by the great California Condor.

•Dinosaur tracks would be present in the Grand Canyon, however, those layers are too recent and have since eroded away from the area. One such layer is the Moenkopi Sandstone, which holds the famous dinosaur tracks of the Tuba City area.

•Science suggests that 4,000 to 8,000 ft of sedimentary layers from the “Age of Dinosaurs” once covered the Grand Canyon area!!

The Utah Agave is an icon of the Southwest Desert. They’re often referred to as a Century Plant, as it may take years or even centuries for the central stalk to shoot up and flower. After waiting patiently for so long, the agave dramatically dies immediately after its grand finale fireworks show of green and yellow flowers.

Did you know that the Tuolumne Meadows Post Office in the high country of Yosemite National Park holds the oldest postmark stamp in the country?! That’s right, this little inking implement has quite the story to tell, greeting eager loved ones on post cards and letters with its stylish stamp since 1948. •The tiny Tuolumne Meadows Post Office is a critical stopping point and lifeline for long-distance hikers in the area, receiving nearly 200 resupply packages per week during peak season! 📦 •The Tuolumne Meadows Post Office sits at nearly 8,700 ft above sea level, some 4,700 ft above Yosemite Valley! 💌 •These guys are DEDICATED! Raspberry brambles are fruiting throughout Yosemite Valley, which means BEARS 🐻 These furry phenomena are seen throughout the year, however, they’re a fairly regular occurrence this season where food is east to get. This includes campgrounds and parking lots where snacks and toiletries are not being secured properly. #BearAware •Don’t leave food or scented items in your vehicle. This includes gum, chapstick, sunscreen, etc. •Use a food locker correctly (found at all established campgrounds and major parking areas). Bears will check to see if they’re latched! •Dispose of or secure your trash! •Bears may be interested in toiletry items that don’t have an odor to us (body/face wipes, first aid components, etc) •Use bear-resistant containers while backpacking and camping in wilderness areas. •Do not approach a bear for that perfect Instagram pic!!
