There is some that like the city—
Grass that's curried smooth and green,
Theaytres and stranglin' collars,
Wagons run by gasoline—
But for me it's hawse and saddle
Every day without a change,
And a desert sun a-blazin'
On a hundred miles of range.

Just a-ridin', a-ridin'—
Desert ripplin' in the sun,
Mountains blue among the skyline—
I don't envy anyone
When I'm ridin'.

An excerpt from Ridin' by Charles Badger Clark.

Clark was an American cowboy poet, and the first poet laureate of South Dakota!

The Badger Clark Historic Trail is a little loop trail in Custer State Park that is about 1 mile in length. Affectionately known as the Badger Hole, Clark’s cabin is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Clark built his home near Legion Lake. Here he wrote poetry, letters and maintained a solitary life for over 30 years.

Today, the Badger Hole remains much as it was when Badger lived there. As you walk through the doors of the Badger Hole, or wander along the Badger Clark Historic Trail, you walk back into a place and a time of a man who lived and shared a simple life.

Have you ever driven on Iron Mountain Road in Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore?

Through a series of twists and turns that showcase pigtail bridges, magnificent Black Hills scenery, and tunnels that frame the national memorial - this drive should be on your bucket list.

Constructed in the 1930s, experience the road that engineers once said couldn't be built. And incase you were wondering, the Doane Robinson Tunnel (photographed here) is only about 12'0" wide & 11'4" high!
