Calamity Jane wasn’t just a legend of the Wild West, she was a force of nature. A sharpshooter, storyteller, and frontierswoman who defied expectations at every turn. She roamed the Black Hills, rode with the best, and carved her own path in history.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate her grit, her independence, and her larger-than-life spirit—one that still echoes through South Dakota today!

🎉🇺🇸 POV: it’s 2025 and you’re invited to celebrate George Washington’s 293rd birthday!

You know the lineup of presidents on Mount Rushmore would be on the guest list - so we asked AI to imagine what this celebration would look like!

Fun fact: George Washington’s actual birthday is February 22, 1732, but his legacy lives on through Presidents' Day! Originally established to honor him, the holiday now celebrates all U.S. presidents and falls on the third Monday in February each year.

Tag a history buff who’d love to join this party, and Happy Presidents’ Day!

🦕 Throwback to Bedrock City: A Blast from South Dakota’s Past!

Did you know South Dakota was once home to its very own Flintstones theme park? Bedrock City, located near Custer, brought the stone-age town to life with colorful buildings and giant dinosaurs! Families from all over stopped to explore this quirky roadside attraction, complete with cartoon-inspired fun straight out of the 1960s.

While Bedrock City is no longer around, it remains a fond memory for many who visited.

Did you ever visit Bedrock City? Share your memories in the comments. Yabba Dabba Doo!

Isn't it exciting to see the Carvers working on the Horse's Mane? Here you can see one Crew Member clearing pieces of granite from the front of the Mane while in the background another Carver is surveying. At the same time, although you are unable to see in this photo, saw cuts are happening on the side of the Mountain visible to the Visitor Center.

So what do you think, will spring come early?

Groundhogs are getting all the attention today, but let’s not forget their furry cousins in the Sciuridae family!

👉 Prairie Dogs: AKA the social butterflies of the prairie, and they’ve got the neighborhoods to prove it! Their underground “towns” can span hundreds of acres, with tunnels so complex, they’re basically rodent architects.

👉 Ground Squirrels: Snack hoarders and sprinters! These speedy little guys can run up to 8 mph (good luck catching them mid-snack).

👉 Yellow-Bellied Marmots: The Black Hills’ professional loungers. These “rock chucks” spend nearly 80% of their lives in their burrows, hibernating for up to 8 months a year. When they do emerge, you’ll probably catch them sunbathing on a warm rock. Self-care goals, right?

👉 Woodchucks: While the woodchuck tongue twister is fun, their diet is mostly grass, leaves, and veggies—wood isn’t actually on the menu.
