Roofing in Japan. They use heavy ceramic tiles because of high winds and typhoons. The ladder on the left had a load of tiles that was mechanically lifted to the top of the roof. We turned around to take a video of what we saw but they were done lifting up all of the tiles already. Pretty cool though ^_^

Today is setsubun. Setsubun (節分) is the day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan. Although it's not the official New Year, it is similar in its ritual and cultural associations of 'cleansing' the previous year as the beginning of the new season of spring. Setsubun was accompanied by a number of rituals and traditions held at various levels to drive away the previous year's bad fortunes and evil spirits for the year to come.

The main ritual associated with the observance of Setsubun is mamemaki (豆撒き, 'bean scattering'); this ritual sees roasted soybeans (known as fukumame (福豆, 'fortune beans')) either thrown out of the front door, or at a member of the family wearing an oni (demon or ogre) mask while shouting 'Devils out! Fortune in!' (鬼は外! 福は内!, Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!), before slamming the door. The beans are thought to symbolically purify the home by driving away the evil spirits that bring misfortune and bad health with them. Then, as part of bringing luck in, it is customary to eat roasted soybeans, one for each year of one's life (kazoedoshi), plus one more for bringing good luck for the year.

The sounds of the countryside of Japan. If you listen really hard you can hear the sound of the bell going off at the middle school nearby. The bell is quite loud in person and I don't remember hearing any frogs, but the phone picked up clearly on the frogs but had trouble recording the bell in the distance. It is a nice little tune compared to the bells for school in America. nihonscope.com

Our Japanese Journey & Business

This Fan Page is dedicated to http://nihonscope.com where I post about everything that is happening, happened or going to happen in Japan, at least from what I find interesting. Anime, Manga, News, Culture, Food, Music, Festivals and more. Stay up with the awesomeness of Japan. I actually post more in general through Facebook so it would be best to like the fan page!

Currently my wife and I have lived in Japan for about 18 months then returned to America to come back to Japan in 2020 to start our business in Fukuoka, Japan. We share a lot of different information about Japan as well as some of our journeys. One of our businesses will be to help possible Japanese students find the perfect school to attend in Japan.

We happened to have a horrible experience going through Go! Go! Nihon, and after we used them we found that we now know enough to help individuals get in touch with the PERFECT school they want without being forced to pick from a small handful of school that WE solely want to work with (like Go! Go! Nihon does).

Instead we will be working with our Japanese connections in the Japanese school system to get you in touch with that perfect school in the city YOU want to live in and then make sure you have access to the right information to land your student VISA with minimal challenges.
