Yesterday, I went to photograph Lotus blossoms by the 12th St lake, when a couple of White Peacock butterflies caught my eye. They were busily‘fooling around’ in the grass. I started photographing them just in case neat images happened. After the first images, I noticed how damaged their wings were as they frolicked and flew around. Image #6 shows one up close and personal. I couldn’t believe how fast that butterfly could fly. Even with more than ½ of its wings missing, it moved rapidly and gracefully. If I hadn’t seen it take-off, I wouldn’t have believed my eyes.

I’m heartened by nature’s resiliency as represented by this love-making pair. As a point of reference, I included image #7 to show what a complete White Peacock looked like. It was part of the Peacock butterfly shoot. 🇯🇲

Today, I went to look at the Water Lilies at Victory Pointe, in downtown Clermont, to see if anything caught my eye. I wasn’t disappointed. One of the first things I saw was this pair of blooms. There are so many possibilities. These four images are just a first look. There are filters and other processing options ahead. Their juxtaposition was serendipitous. I love Water Lilies. 🇯🇲

My wife and I came across this Sandhill Crane couple, who surprised us with a little dance by the male. It was as graceful as it was a surprise. I told my wife that they did it for her. On my own, they would’ve just watched me go by. 🇯🇲 #

The sunlight penetrated the Magnolia tree’s shadows and lit up this Gulf Fritillary that had no idea how captivating she was. 🇯🇲

I decided to capture this Three-spotted Skipper butterfly having a sip of Primrose nectar, on video, yesterday morning. Little did I know, I would capture it folding its proboscis as it got its wings ready for flight. It all happened so fast I didn’t know what I had till I looked at it in slow motion. The ‘action’ starts after 12 seconds. I found it fascinating to watch. 🇯🇲

This insect is a new one for me. I saw it resting on a hibiscus plant. At first glance, I thought “ Bumblebee’, because of the fuzz, but its long wings said no. I captured a couple of images and turned on my Seek app. It said Mallophora fautrix. I had to look that up. That’s a Bee Killer Fly. This insect’s appearance uncannily mimics the Bumblebee. I am afraid its appearance is testament to the success of my insect-friendly butterfly garden. I am going to be on the lookout for it and its relatives. I had noticed a couple of large insects zooming around. One of them could have been this fella. 🇯🇲

A couple of evenings ago, this Cardinal’s incessant chirping caught my attention and made me want to find it. I figured out its most likely tree. The darkening shadows made it very challenging to spot it. I saw a flicker of movement and I quickly zeroed in on it. I maxed out my 300mm lens and set the aperture at f5.6. I lucked out. I felt quite fortunate to capture several good images. I should say great images, considering the poor lighting. It was fun. 🇯🇲

Barred Yellow Butterfly images. Image #1 is an intact butterfly. Images #2 & #3 are of an aged butterfly. I say “aged” because of its tattered hind wings. I really love image #3, because one has to work hard to capture the barred design on the topside of the wings. These are some busy butterflies. Always moving in seemingly haphazard patterns. It was worth the effort. 🇯🇲

Cloudy vs clear skies. Image #1 was captured on a cloudy night. It was the best I could get. I just wanted a moon shot. I knew what was behind the clouds. So I took it. Two evenings later, I captured this clear image ( #2). It confirmed what i imagined two evenings ago. I like them both. 🇯🇲

Large Carpenter Bees among the Cosmos blooms. As fast as these interactions happen, I was very thrilled to have captured the failed attempt by one bee to chase away another. A benefit of having Cosmos as a background is their colorfulness makes any subject look good. More Cosmos shots are in the offing. 🇯🇲

Greater Blue Heron, pt lll. I promised some take-off images from my last week’s photo shoot at Crescent Lake. I felt very fortunate to have been able to find a clear line of sight for these images. Blue Herons are so graceful, considering their great wingspan. I hope to see him again soon. 🇯🇲

My Greater Blue Heron photo episode continues here. After we got past making eye contact, this handsome fellow got itching to leave. He began flexing his wings. I knew he’d be taking of soon. I knew I couldn’t forecast what his flight path would look like, but it was coming.
His wings were massive and powerful when he made his first flex. It was awesome to see it this up close and through the 300mm lens. 🇯🇲

This Greater Blue Heron surprised me two days ago while photographing lotuses. With my focus on other subjects, I was completely unaware of this large bird’s presence. He knew I was there, however. When I saw him, he cautiously moved about. I only got peeks until he decided to fly away. (Those images tomorrow.) I appreciated the glimpses I got. It was a slow, measured unveiling around branches and through leaves. I thoroughly enjoyed the shoot, as I tried to always capture its eye. 🇯🇲

“Here’s looking at you, kid.” “I’ve got my eyes on you.” The pattern on the Gulf Fritillary’s underside is really freaky…so many ‘eyes’. The white areas are highly reflective. A sight to see when they catch the full sun. So much to see and to learn. 🇯🇲

My developing butterfly garden is working out great. It has given me increasing opportunity to capture butterfly action images. This one, for example, is of a Gulf Fritillary moving from one flower to the next. I am thrilled with the capture. Next step is capturing more detail. 🇯🇲

Yesterday morning was a beautiful one. This Gulf Fritillary helped to make it so. 🇯🇲

It always amazes me to see damaged butterflies just flitting by like nothing was amiss. This Gulf Fritillary had me dropping my jaw. The right hindwing was missing. As was a bit of the right forewing. They got no favors or seemed to ask for any. Seeing them still flying with bits missing always reminds me of photos I saw of WWII bombers limping back to base. There’s one big difference, these butterflies aren’t limping. They easily move from flower to flower.

I added a TopazLabs Glow filter to create image #3. I tried to capture some of the magic in these individuals. 🇯🇲

I paid a very pleasant visit to the Leu Gardens, in Orlando, a few days ago. Captured lots of images. I loved the tones and texture of the bamboos and palms.

I applied a couple of TopazLabs filters on images #3 & #4. I like how they turned out. I may do a large print of #4.

Gulf Fritillaries are everywhere these days. They are really loving our garden. It’s like a butterfly Grand Central Station these days. Their orange color just pops everywhere. They fidget so much though, I call them ’flitteries’. 🇯🇲

This morning’s light helped my capture of this Cosmos bloom. I got its detail. That Rover Ant really stood out in processing the image. I didn’t notice it when I was capturing images. To me, this image is evocative of brooches or medals. I guess the plant was wearing this bloom as a badge of honor. 🇯🇲

01/08/2021

The Gulf Fritillaries are loving the flowers in my garden. Today, they are getting their fill from the colorfulCrown of Thorns. It’s so enjoyable and amazing to watch them do their thing. 🇯🇲
