Luxury Tented Safaris
Our most popular programs are 10–12 day safaris for private groups – especially families. These programs feature a combination of our luxury tented camps + privately owned ranches such as Lewa Downs. Our safaris provide the best variety of wildlife – the magnificent species endemic to both northern and southern Kenya – as well as a wonderful introduction to colorful traditio
nal cultures such as the Maasai and Samburu people. We believe our classic luxury tented safari is the finest way to experience the East African wilderness. first invented luxury tented camping in 1904 and we feel with Don Young Safaris we have perfected it. Our specialty is private luxury, mobile tented camp programs in Kenya. Our camp crew: including chef, valets, waiters and camp guards are not just ‘staff’ but proud professionals who supply all the homey, personal touches of a fine hotel. WORLD FAMOUS FOOD
Many of our clients who frequent the great restaurants of London and New York City, have said our food is as delicious and enjoyable as they have ever had. Before each safari, we send our guests a questionnaire for diet preferences and we can prepare vegetarian, low-fat, ‘South Beach Level II” or “Picky U.S. Teenager” menus as required. ROMANTIC AND COMFORTABLE TENTS AND FURNISHINGS
Don Young has designed all the tents and camp furnishings himself to create the perfect blend of romance, safety, and comfort while maintaining the true safari experience of camping out in the African wilderness. TRUE SAFARIS
Much of the tourist industry in Africa is now taken up with the ‘boutique safari camp’, small permanent lodges, which although beautifully decorated, are not the True Safari Experience. We have stubbornly stayed true to our origins while still providing Africa’s most comfortable tented camps. All of our clients are personal referrals, and over 75% of our clients come with us every few years. Join us for the trip of a lifetime!

Today is a day of great sentimental power for me.
134 years ago, 20 October 1890, Captain Sir Richard F. Burton, my hero and inspiration in exploration, scholarship, archaeology, etc., began his last great expedition.
34 years ago I was honoured to be one of several eminent Burton scholars and collectors to present papers at the Burton Centenary at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. The sponsors very generously paid for my ticket to fly from Kenya to Pasadena, put me up at the Atheneum, put me on the schedule as the opening speaker, then after feting us all for 3 days, I jumped on the next flight back to my safari in Africa. I hope Capt. Burton would be proud. Thank you RFB. I raise a glass of vintage Port in your honour.

Saturday afternoon with Josiah.
While Tina and Alejandra are running errands in town this Saturday afternoon, Daddy and Josiah are at work curating the Josiah Young Natural History Collection/Kid's Cabinet of Curiosities. With Josiah doing his imitation of Charles Wilson Peale. With love from a happy man.

Ancient history.
This is the first picture I know of taken of me on one of the first safaris I guided. Recently, one of the guests on that safari, sent me some of her pictures, including this one. I see I am wearing the Willis & Geiger Safari shirt which, although now heavily worn and covered in patches, I still wear! Beside the photograph is the back page from my first brochure. I am thrilled that several members of my first safari are planning to join me again for a reunion in 2025! I always loved ancient history. With love, Don Young

As I prepare for my 44th Safari Season, and look back on many fantastic adventures and many wonderful guests, I have also been going through old photo-albums. Occasionally I find a picture that brings it all back; muscling (no power-steering in those days!) my beloved FJ45 Land Cruiser along rugged tracks, long hours squinting through the dust and heat haze scanning the horizon for big cats, with my Akubra hat on my head and my Leica 8x32b binoculars hanging around my neck (still got them both). Then, at the end of a beautiful day, a hot shower in my tent, and a campfire shared with happy guests as the Africa stars blaze overhead. I am a lucky man!

The Flying Jewel. If the best designers at Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany, etc., joined forces to create a design as exquisitely beautiful as the Pygmy kingfisher, they couldn't come close. And that would not include the dazzling physical virtuosity of this tiny bird. I spent a long time watching this creature on Sunday, and drove home to Kiota Safari House inspired and full of wonder. Ancient people believed it was a Divine being with supernatural powers. Who am I to argue?

Great to be back at Kiota Safari House on the fabulous El Karama Wildlife Conservancy, after a wonderful Newland Tarlton Safaris season. On the drive home, I spotted a Pygmy kingfisher preening beside a waterhole, and once I arrived on my verandah and constructed the requisite Vesper Martini, I was interrupted by a courting pair of African hawk-eagles, being mobbed by Little swifts. At dusk, elephants were everywhere vocalising and socialising. A warm welcome home! With love, Don Young

Working on my Embodied Cognition
"Reading changes the brain by changing its connectivity. When we read, connectivity in the left temporal cortex and central sulcus - areas important for language and the sensation of movement respectively - is increased. Which is why reading a novel can transport you into another world. If a character you are reading about is running for example, neurons in these areas boost their connectivity and start mimicking the physical sensation of running. Neuroscientists call this phenomenon embodied cognition and it's a way for our brains to incorporate bodily experiences into how we think." -- 'How the Mind Changed' by Joseph Jebelli

Time for Vespers II
The sun slips below the horizon, limning the shapes of the wildlife with its golden glow; it's Vespers time in the Mara. I am happy to report our Official NNewland Tarlton SafarisCamp Cocktail, the Vesper Martini, has been a success amongst our favorite cocktail connoisseurs. According to Ian Fleming (via James Bond), the key ingredient is Kino Lillet, which alas, is not produced any more. I have found that Cocchi Americano Aperativo is a splendid alternative. Give it a try next Vesper Time.
Happy weekend everyone!

Good morning from Kiota Safari House and the spectacular El Karama Wildlife Conservancy. We are enjoying fine weather and exciting wildlife viewing, not to mention gorgeous sunrises. Many of my FB friends are already on their way, or packing up to join us this year, but for those of you dreaming about another safari (or your first one), we would love to see you in 2025! Happy Mothers' Day!
Motherhood is the greatest journey on the planet, and mothers are the heroes of the most epic of adventures and today we celebrate the mothers of the world; our own mothers and the mothers of our children. It is my great joy to praise and thank my beloved wife Celestina, the awesome mother to our kids. Thankyou sweetheart. With love, Don Young

Their ray extended light across the darkness:
But was the One above or was it under?
Creative force was there, and fertile power:
Below was energy, above was impulse.
No one knows whence creation has arisen;
And whether he has or has not produced it:
He who surveys it in the highest heaven,
He only knows, or happily he may know not.

Home schooling for 3-year-olds.
The nice thing about being a Fossil Father who works from his home office, I can devote quality time to my kids to pursue their interests and encourage their curiosity. Gosh, what a coincidence that both Josiah and Alejandra are passionate about wildlife conservation, fossils & stone tools, old airplanes, dinosaurs and books about all of the above. I am such a lucky guy. With love, Don Young

Fake news has been around a long time.
I was just reading some documents in our Newland & Tarlton archives, and saw this letter to former President Theodore Roosevelt from Newland Tarlton Safaris guide RJ Cuninghame, explaining that he (RJ) hadn't actually been shot by the Germans (this is WWI) as a spy. So, yeah, fake news has always been around!

Newland, Tarlton & Co. Safaris & Expeditions
Africa’s Original Luxury Safari Company - Est. 1904
Don Young is CEO of Africa’s original luxury safari company - Newland, Tarlton & Co., founded in Nairobi in 1904.
“N&T” were the pioneers of luxury safaris in Africa. They created the concept of professionally organized tented safaris, led by the finest guides and the best camp crew. Their clients included the Duke of Connaught, the Marquis of Waterford, Carl Akeley of the Explorer’s Club of New York, US President Roosevelt, and many others. Their passion for excellence re-defined the Swahili word safari and made it synonymous with stylish luxury and romantic adventure. Newland & Tarlton invented the concept of safari as we know it today and brought the Golden Age of Travel to Africa.
Under Don Young’s leadership, the modern Newland, Tarlton & Co. are still the masters of the quintessential East African camping experience -- blending an unrivalled intimacy with nature with superb hospitality, great food, and Edwardian comforts. What distinguishes our 1904 Vintage Safari Camp from all others is not just our Edwardian décor and vintage style tents, but the professionalism and enthusiasm of our camp crew, the quality and delightful variety of our food, and our meticulous attention to every detail.
