AFFC has had the pleasure of guiding Multi-Day fly fishing trips with private safari camp and private chef since 2017. It’s been a lot of hard work. Each year the main base camp gets a little nicer. This year, camp will be 30’ from the river at the end of a sunflower field. These trips book early and availability is limited. Contact us for more info.

Friday Fish Story

We’ve been having long conversations with Ol’ Leroy Brown of Ledges Lane, Watauga River. He and some of his longtime buddies are having a rough go as of late. He’s on oxygen and has a UTI from eating too many snails. Some of the other guys and gals are having intestinal issues and heartburn from trying to digest grass. (There are newly formed grass mats that are thriving in the river). He said, “all the food is in the grass so we have to eat the grass to get the food. I’m sick of salad!,” “It makes me lethargic and hangry.” “Where’s all the foam-bound mayflies and crawling caddis!”
He asked if we could help a business partner out. We told him not to worry and assured there are many who would be happy to help. So…

In an effort to improve water quality on the Watauga River’s “Trophy Section,” Asheville Fly Fishing Company donated $1000 to support the Blevins “Swim Guide” testing site for 2023. Swim Guide is a public, online database that hosts water quality data. The Watauga River Keeper manages the Blevins site and three others within the tailwater section of the river below Wilbur dam. In 2023 there were 707 Blevins user visits to the web and app platform. The site was tested weekly from May 22 to Sept 1. It failed to meet water quality standards every week. Since 2020, water quality in the trophy section is trending the wrong way as seen in graphs. The river is showing signs of fatigue and feeling the effects of urbanization. For almost 10 years AFFC has been donating 2 trips a year in support of WNCW radio station. WNCW does so much for the music community, musicians and listeners. Many thanks to everyone at the station for all you do. My grandfather, George Fisher, was a radio dj for 40 years and instilled music in me.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of guiding one of the raffle winners for a day of fly fishing on the Watauga river. It was a great day talking music and fishing. Thank you!
