We are joining our local Pheasants Forever chapter again to host another youth hunt this year on December 9th. All youth must have gone through a hunters safety course. We will be taking the first 20 kids so please let me or any PF member know if you're able to attend. We will meet at the lodge (39881 305th st, Dante, SD) by 9:30 to do a safety discussion and start hunting at 10. We will finish with cleaning any birds and a lunch around 12 at the same location.

A TRUE picture worth 1000 words. So many times I've walked behind this dog on point in multiple scenarios and the outcome is the same. Kolbie never let's me down. She has been as solid as this series of pictures show her entire life.

This day was no different and I'm so thankful for Third Wheel Photo for coming out and being able to capture it. Dustin not only has a talent in capturing unforgettable moments, but he also has an appreciation for being in that very moment by taking in more than what is seen through his amazing photos!

Part 3 Kolbie the 12 year old Vizsla

I photograph a lot of dogs in the field and as I work through hundreds and thousands of images I’m always in awe of how impressive each dog is, their unique mannerisms, their attitude, and how each shot leaves me in appreciation and wonder. I wonder what the dogs are thinking in these moments that unfold in the blink of an eye. The beautiful thing about hunting behind a camera is it slows the moment down and freezes it into these incredible frames that allow us to relive and take in all that is missed in the moment.

In this frame Kolbie shines through and I can’t believe her steadiness all the way through the flush. As a guy with 2 labs I’m used to seeing crazy explosive passionate chases and flushes and love those moments. But capturing Kolbie here gives me an appreciation for a different breed of dog and an understanding of the fanatical pointer guys out there and why this gets their motor running. Its like a dance that Kolbie has practiced over and over and she trusts her partner behind her to do his part. I like to think that Kolbie is thinking the same thing I am as the bird flees towards the sky. Thinking that there is no better way so spend a day in the field, the sun on my face, surrounded by great people, and getting to watch the most beautiful bird out there stretch into the sun after everyone has done their job.

It’s a pleasure and a gift to capture dogs in the twilight of their careers. Providing something tangible to go with memories that will never be forgotten. I think it also honors the dog in an incredible way.

This shot brings back all the feels as Kolbie holds rock solid, the sun lighting up the gray in her coat, she shows no signs of slowing down even though her body shows it’s age, she’s done it all, and at least at this point the hunt isn’t over for her as she watches another rooster rise to the skies and hears everyone shouting rooster around her and the volley of gunfire to follow. The life of a bird dog doesn’t get any better.

Part 2, Kolbie the 12 year old Vizsla

Kolbie has now at this point done everything to make my job easier. She played the wind and locked on point. The cagey late season rooster has made a break for it. Kolbie being the rock solid veteran in the field shows her class and training by staying steady through the point and flush giving Erik some room to take his shot should the bird elevate. In the meantime she also gave me a great chance to capture the rooster exploding out of the milo while in the background she and Erik act like they’ve done this a thousand times together (because they have).

I consider myself lucky to see and freeze these moments that happen so fast in the field, when hunting we just can’t slow it down enough. It brings a new level of appreciation to the countless hours poured in trading a dog for these moments. It also freezes and exposed the drama and excitement of every point and flush.

Pretty awesome experience with an amazing photographer! The caption also captures so much more about this dog and what she has done for me. Cant wait to see the rest!

I was recently lucky enough to hunt with some great guys and even better dogs. I’ve gotten smart enough the last few years to know that I need to listen to the oldest hunters and follow the oldest dogs. By doing so I’m always bound to learn something and come away with a greater appreciation for my time in the field.

The next few days I’m going to share a few shots of Kolbie, a 12 year old Vizsla. The gray in her coat shows her experience. Maybe she’s lost a step on the younger dogs as she carefully navigates the milo. But as soon as she locks on point, the scent of a South Dakota rooster filling her nose, her old eyes turn new as she’s transformed back into a puppy. She knows her job and executes it flawlessly.

In times like these it makes a guy thankful for good dogs and how it isn’t fair that we only get to spend such a short time with them.

Here’s the first shot I’m going to share in a series of Kolbie working with Erik of Cimpl Made Hunts working the edge of a milo field lined with cedars. She read the script and locked up on point, alerting me that a bird was near and I was able to set up for a shot. As I set up the rooster made a break for it. Kolbie stayed rock solid and picturesque through these first fleeting moments…
