From late December through March, the great herds of 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles arrive on the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti for the calving season. With abundant grass and water, the herds give birth to thousands of newborn wildebeests and zebras over a 3-week period, usually in February. It’s an amazing wildlife spectacle with lots of predator/prey interactions.

We ended our Peru trip with a 5 day trek across the remote, high Andes. The hike was simply amazing. We hiked over passes reaching nearly 17,000 ft and through landscapes of snowy peaks, deep canyons, and wide valleys. Along the way we enjoyed great food, hot showers, a comfortable bed each night, and llamas to carry our gear. One of the best experiences I've ever had!

The ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu sits on a steep ridge high above the Urubamba River. It's a spectacular place full of Inca stonework, terraces, and incredible views. The site can get crowded but it's a place you have to see to believe!

We did a day hike on the Inca Trail and entered Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. Along the way we saw amazing scenery, orchids, and a few remote Inca ruins.

The past few days we spent exploring the extensive Inca ruins around Ollantaytambo. We took a day hike to Pumamarca, climbed up to the qolqas ruins, wandered the huge fortress and old Inca streets of Ollantaytambo.

Great start to our Peru trip! Began in Lima walking the historic district and a cool food tour including some authentic Pisco sours and ceviche. Next stop was the Sacred Valley with lunch with a local family, a visit to some Inca ruins and an ancient salt mine. Off to Machu Picchu soon!

Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers lots more than gorilla trekking. For example, you can hike across the Bwindi, one of Africa’s oldest and most diverse forests. Follow the Ivy River Trail with your Batwa guides through verdant rain forests, to your next lodge on the southern edge of the park. A wide diversity of wildlife can be spotted during the walk, including monkeys, duikers, birds and many colorful butterflies. The Ivy River Trail takes about 4-5 hours and offers visitors a close-up experience of the natural wonders within this unique rainforest environment.

One of Africa’s most colorful and abundant birds, the beautiful lilac-breasted roller is commonly seen in national parks throughout eastern and southern Africa. The rainbow of colors this bird displays is truly stunning. Both males and females exhibit a range of pastel colors from the lilac breast, olive head, and rusty cheeks to vivid wings of turquoise and blue that flash in the sunlight as the bird flies over the grasslands. They are relatively unafraid when game vehicles approach and it’s often easy to get close-up views of this spectacular bird.

A vast majority of travelers head to northern Tanzania to visit Ngorongoro or the Serengeti. However, the parks in southern Tanzania are far less crowded and offer a huge diversity of landscapes and wildlife.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is cloaked in old-growth rainforest and is well known for excellent hiking, trekking, mountain climbing and forest walks. Only accessible on foot, the mountains keep their secrets from all but the most adventurous. The park is a biodiversity hotspot with endemic birds and monkeys found nowhere else. There are lots of hiking options here, including a half-day hike to the 550-foot Sanje Waterfall. Udzungwa is worth a few days if traveling between the coast and Ruaha National Park.
