I always recommend using a passport book for a cruise, even if it is not required. Better safe than sorry in an emergency. Emergencies do happen and you don't want to be stuck in a foreign country without one. You need a passport to fly home from Mexico, Belize, Jamaica, Bahamas, Canada, and any other non-US country or territory.

Headed for the high seas? Don't forget to pack your passport book, even if you're not required to bring it on your cruise. It could save the day in an emergency if you need to fly home fast! Find more cruise tips at travel.state.gov/cruise

ALWAYS start packing with a completely empty bag. Empty out suitcase and duffle bag pockets to make sure no prohibited items are accidentally in your luggage. Some countries have very strict and specific prohibitions. Look them up before you pack at travel.state.gov/destination.
