Beautiful, mesmerizing and captivating, the moon jellyfish are commonly seen and encountered in the warm coastal waters of the Florida Keys.
They do not have a brain, only a central nervous system that controls their movement and body functions. Although touching them results in a painful “sting” if you come into contact with them, they are not predatory and can not see you or seek you out. They are slow moving because they are weak swimmers.
They are not poisonous but the sting from touching them is painful to most humans. If you or anyone you are with are stung, rinse with salt water, apply vinegar and a baking soda paste. If an allergic reaction occurs, seek medical attention. Fortunately we have terrific medical facilities and health care providers up and down the Keys.
Our advice about moon jellyfish: watch them, admire them, take in their beauty but steer clear!!!

They are carnivorous creatures who eat zooplankton and fish eggs. Their natural predators are other jellyfish, fish and sharks.
Moon jellyfish are cousins to the coral reef and are often found near our reef.
