Since announcing our Basque Country adventures, we’ve eagerly anticipated seeing these thoughtfully curated experiences come to life. In September, our first trip unfolded beautifully—sidra in hand, we embraced the art of slow food, deeply inspired by the Bertsolaritza tradition, where poetic improvisation enriches meals and time-honored ingredients. This journey left us captivated and dreaming of more.

This summer, we’re thrilled to return with Chef Chris Arellanes. Known for his expertise in prioritizing clean ingredients, Chef Chris will guide us through a cultural and culinary exploration—from sourcing ingredients at local markets to crafting meals that pay homage to Basque traditions. Together, we’ll dive into the vibrant community of Northern Spain, connecting over food, stories, and the soul of Basque culture.

Dear Adventurer,
I’m writing to you from my living room in Oregon, where the rain is falling steadily, the sea of green outside my window seems endless, and my boxer, Ben, is curled up beside me. The fireplace crackles warmly. With Thanksgiving upon us, I’m reflecting on the beauty of the journey we’re all on.

This season reminds us to pause and appreciate our shared connections, stories, and adventures. I’m deeply grateful for my family, the incredible Modern Adventure team who bring our vision to life, and the Tastemakers and Partners who help us make the world come alive for our community.

Recently, I had the privilege of working in the field on one of our Modern Adventure Custom travel experiences. On a warm fall evening in Buenos Aires, I glided through the city streets on a nighttime bike ride with two colleagues. The air carried the sweet scent of jacaranda blossoms, and the lights shimmered as if the metropolis itself was breathing. Each turn revealed more textures —grand boulevards, quiet alleyways, and the vibrant hum of life.

Our destination was La Bomba del Tiempo, a legendary percussion show that's been played every Monday night for 18 years. The beat of the drums reverberated through the crowd, and I danced with complete surrender, swept up in the raw, tribal energy. It was the joy of movement in its purest form.

Buenos Aires is a city of contrasts and passions, and it reminded me that adventure isn’t just about discovering new places—it’s about immersing yourself in their soul and awakening parts of yourself you didn’t even know were there.

This year, Modern Adventure has grown in ways I couldn’t have imagined. From meaningful partnerships and unforgettable journeys to new opportunities to serve you through Custom Travel, our mission remains steadfast: to create life-changing experiences through the art of travel.

Meet Peruvian master weaver, Nilda Callañaupa.

Last June, we set out on a remarkable journey to Peru with José Salazar. On this adventure, we embraced the spirit of the culture—watching vibrant blankets woven by skilled hands and meeting local artisans whose hospitality and craftsmanship left a lasting impression.

One of those artisans is Nilda Callañaupa, an Indigenous master weaver from Chinchero, with whom we spend time on day two of all our Peruvian adventures. Growing up in a small village, she began tending sheep when she was six years old before her mother taught her to spin yarn and weave using the wool from sheep, llamas, and alpacas.

From that young age, she fell in love with the art of traditional Andean weaving, but has since watched it slowly fade in her community.

“Traditional weaving practices on ancient-style backstrap looms were left in the hands of the elders,” Callañaupa said. “Young people were not learning to weave.”

With a passion for reviving these ancient techniques, Nilda drove cultural preservation by founding the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco in 1996 to empower Quechua women across the region to reclaim their heritage by weaving vibrant textiles with natural dyes and intricate designs that reflect centuries-old traditions.

Nilda’s journey is a testament to the power of cultural pride and community, ensuring that the vibrant history of Andean weaving continues to thrive for future generations.

Every doorway we walk through, from the arches in Marrakech's bustling markets to the stone-covered windows overlooking Machu Picchu, feels like our personal entrance ceremony. We began our journey in the background—on the fringes of the land before us—but now these portals beckon us to break the third wall, to wander into the frame and immerse ourselves in the tradition and history of our each location. Alongside our local partners, it’s a privilege and an honor to walk through these doorways all over the world.

What a summer so far. We’ve followed our tastemakers to Provence, Peru, Portugal, The Republic of Georgia and Morocco, to name a few of the incredible destinations we’ve been privileged to experience.

These trips have only deepened our belief in travel as a transformative force. From communal pit barbecues in the Sacred Valley of Peru to foraging for lunch in Portugal’s Douro Valley alongside local winemakers, we’ve been able to immerse ourselves into the authentic rhythms of our destinations in truly memorable ways.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. At Modern Adventure, we believe travel nurtures well-being year-round. It's a chance to reconnect, gain new perspectives, and grow.

We find joy in crafting experiences for adventure seekers, while understanding the value of stepping back, soaking it all in, and resetting far from home in this beautiful world.
