SO PROUD of Amanda and Karmen of the class of 2023-24 BJMC! They have earned their pink metalsmithing aprons! These are two students from the Basic Jewelry Metals course, a grueling 20-week program. Ok, it's tough, but it's fun. =]

They will now be applying their know-how to their own jewelry designs. I hope to see them at every OPEN STUDIO until the end of time!

Thanks to some interest in FL, I have reimagined (in a non-ai way) my BJMC skills and techniques course into a Basic Jewelry Metals Course that is project based! With all of the know-how and a lot more to take home!

Each project covers one or more key metalsmithing skills.

The design process for 3 dimensional items gets exponentially tricky. I have created these half-sketches to scale, for size 7 rings, intended for wax carving. I know how high or wide I like my designs and by starting with these templates I design within those parameters. What designs do you shoot from in your jewelry design?

Here’s an edgy silver dangle earring design. Add beads if you like or just keep it simple! Almost any small pliers will get you there =] Use 8.5” of 22g wire. Sterling is more ear friendly, but copper can work, too.
1. Bend the ear wire around one end using the graduated handle of a small paint brush.
2. Using your pliers make random twists all down the length, finishing with a tight spiral.
3. Make sharp, angular bends in several spots along the length.
4. Bend the length up on itself 1 or 2 times, and fine tune the arrangement.
5. Repeat for the pair’s mate.

😩 it’s not true. JOE’S Garage is not open. This was a shot from the dead of winter, preparing for the big spring roll out. Yesterday, my official beginning to my new season came and went. I’ve been weirdly plenty busy, working on adoption profiles for , making watercolor videos, and sewing masks from hepa vacuum bags.
But I’m sad for the new students, especially those who signed up for my longer running classes, and for those who had planned to travel—to make a vacation around the BJMC. I feel your enthusiasm, and it hurts to see it dashed.
I am planning for that day when we can all gather together, and I promise to never take a face-to-face for granted again!
I am putting things online. See the Natalie Sorenson Youtube channel for painting and jewelry videos.
And don’t let a drive-by go to waste! You will see my garage door open as soon as spring pops. It will be just me, and maybe Nono, but as long as the traffic is light you should definitely slow down and give me a wave!

I do a little torch enameling. I bought some titanium wire months ago to use in some way, that would take the heat. I don’t typically do beads, but charms need a hole that must stay enamel free, so I made some specific light-tension holders for a series of floral earrings that I’m experimenting with.

Does anyone have any insights to enameling irregular 3F copper forms?

Just for fun! Here is a tutorial I made years ago that is free on Pinterest and Snapguide. They are not for the faint of heart—get ready to get some frustrations out! I made mine from old, unattractive silver plated steel. They are very hard to bend. I recommend that you do your first one on an old fork that you don’t really like!
