💞🐺 Love is in the air! 🐺💞

The Yellowstone gray wolf mating season is typically in February. After a 63-day gestation period, females will give birth to their pups in a den. Litter sizes range from 1 - 6 pups, and multiple females within a pack may give birth to pups, depending on the social structure and food availability within their territory.

Winter and early spring are a great time to visit Yellowstone National Park to look for and observe these dynamic critters. Book your adventure now to learn about and see Canis lupus! Call 406.451.1650

If the high temperature for the day was -11°F and you must fend for yourself, what would you do to survive?
🥶 🦌
Elk of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (Cervus canadensis) are herd animals. They congregate in areas that have adequate food, clear sight-lines for observing incoming predators (humans, canines, etc), and proximity to your friends, who will help keep you warm.

Swipe ➡️ to see steam rising from this herd of elk, north of Yellowstone National Park, on a -11°F day!

Within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, wolves play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. As keystone predators, they help regulate prey populations, ensuring the health of the ecosystems they call home. 🐺

Beyond their ecological significance, there is a profound drama in the way wolves live and thrive as a tightly-knit social unit—a reflection of the strength found in unity and family bonds throughout the animal kingdom.

In a world that sometimes seems to overlook the interconnectedness of all living beings, let us draw inspiration from Canis lupus. Let us nurture our relationships, honor our roles in the grand tapestry of life, and strive for balance in our own ecosystems.

Reflect on the wisdom of the wolf, and may we follow in the tracks and carry the spirit of Canis lupus with us—resilience, collaboration, and fiercely protective of the delicate balance that sustains us all. 🐺

From earthly to celestial wonders ... notice any similarities?

Both features produce a prism of color. However, one is the result of a hot water gradient and thermophiles (heat-loving organisms) and the other is the result of ionized gases.

Grand Prismatic Hot Spring is located in Midway Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. From Earth, Ring Nebula is found south of the bright star Vega, which forms the northwestern vertex of the Summer Triangle.

Whether you are exploring Yellowstone or gazing up into the night sky, there are many wonders to behold!

Trivia Time!
🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
In honor of President's Day, here is some history on three notable figures, who have impacted Yellowstone National Park. Can you identify the three Presidents, based on photos and clues?

1) This President dedicated Yellowstone as the World's First National Park in 1872, by signing the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law. He is often confused with ...

2) This President established the US Forest Service in 1905. He was also present for the laying of the keystone in the archway at the North Entrance in Gardiner, MT in 1903. The archway bears his name.

3) This President signed the Organic Act into law in 1916. The Organic Act officially created the National Park Service, whose primary purpose was to protect and conserve National Parks and Monuments: "The Service thus established shall promote and regulate the use of the Federal areas known as national parks, monuments and reservations…by such means and measures as conform to the fundamental purpose of the said parks, monuments and reservations, which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

It’s trivia time: bear hibernation edition!
🐻
What do bear hibernation and bear cubs have in common?
❄️
If you guessed that bear cubs are born during hibernation, you hit the nail on the head!
🔨
While bears mate from May - June, thanks to an adaptation known as delayed embryo implantation, the embryos do not implant for months, often as late as November! Pregnant females are generally the first bears to go into hibernation, and they actually gestate, give birth, and lactate during hibernation!

Did the groundhog see its shadow where you are?
🐿️ 🌧️
Here in Big Sky, the hibernating Yellow-bellied marmot (the mountain cousin of the groundhog) probably didn’t emerge from its den to see how much longer winter will be. But if it had, it would be pleased to know that there are AT LEAST 6 more weeks of winter!

Trivia Time!

Do you know which Y park (Yosemite or Yellowstone) John Muir visited first?

Spoiler alert, the answer is ⬇️🚨

Believe it or not, he visited Yellowstone first in 1885-1886. In fact one of his more famous quotes was written about Yellowstone’s Rocky Mountains, not Yosemite’s Sierra Nevadas:

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves”

Yellowstone National Park is filled with strange and wonderful geological formations. What do you think of when you see this hot spring mud pot?

Red Spouter was formed on August 17, 1959, as a result of the Hebgen Lake earthquake. This dynamic geothermal feature changes seasonally. In the summertime, it is often a roaring steam vent. In the wintertime, melting snow fills the crater and mixes with iron-rich mud. This creates a thick, viscous tomato soup-like hot spring mudpot.
Whatever season you visit Yellowstone, you will see strange and wonderful things!
