Roberto from chile 🇨🇱 landed his first bonefish and tarpon. There is nothing more rewarding than watching my clients accomplish their fishing dreams😃@roberto_hillp
Jake at it again, such a fun day! A tarpon bite that we both will never forget, we just couldn’t stop laughing!! Great times
Setting the hook in the bony, and rock hard mouth of a tarpon requires coolness, low rod angles, the smallest/strongest sharp hook, and accurate hand/eye coordination. The more you do it, and the more fish you get to eat, the better your timing gets at keeping them on. Still, some stay glued, lots get off…. It’s fly fishing for tarpon, a game of repetition and refinement.
Gary and Jake have been working hard to develop their fly tarpon game……taking casting lessons with me in the offseason, and learning how to fight these fish, practicing with the pulley and the bucket. After 2 tarpon seasons, getting the hang on casting in the wind, feeding fish and setting the hook, things are now starting to click!! Nothing makes me happier than watching my clients get their angling skills to the next level! Good things happen to those who are willing to put in the work to reach a goal.
Such a fun week with my boy Peter, there wasn’t a day that we didn’t get bit, jumped them or grabbed them, including some very big fish. Always an incredible time with him and the fun gets better every season. Definitely a client who takes this game serious, puts the hard work at home and comes as a better caster every year, getting more keen and technical on feeding fish and getting more bites, incredibly important aspects in such a difficult and technical fishery for big tarpon like the Florida keys. The results say it all. Let’s go Pete!!
Always a blast to fish with my good buddy @captmaz
Lots of fun, laughs, and some serious tarpon angling with Keith and Eric 🙌🏻. @karkeith @eric_donnelly
Big congrats to Michelle White on a great catch! This fish made us work crazy hard…First, survived a big nasty knot on the fly line, that miraculously cleared the rod guides. Took me at least half hour running the fish down on plane, and grabbing the line to work on the knot until I finally got it undone. Then, once Michelle was able to start pulling, the fish took us to a series of man made structures and shorelines, and did everything she could to get away. Dragged us for about half mile before I was able to remove the fly from her face. For sure, one of the toughest and most stubborn tarpon I’ve ever seen hooked up. Fought on 20lb tippet, With a girth of 41 inches and a length of 72 inches, according to BTT’s formula, she weighs around 160lb, being Michelle’s biggest tarpon to date and the biggest I’ve brought to hand caught on fly tackle, only being surpassed by a fish I caught myself on spin tackle 10 years ago. Great Job! @akmtngurl
Tarpon season #11 with Mike McLean, always a pleasure to watch his progress over the years.
Another year watching Costner getting his ass kicked by a big poon. Love it! 🤣 @marksherman24

Keys fly Tarpon Season: The good and the ugly… What’s the most crucial element of your fly tarpon trip: without a doubt, the weather. You can pick the dates, but not the weather. Not everything is tarpon jumps, high fives, singing drags, face grabs, hero shots, broken rods, sunny days, beautiful sunrises, happiness. While showing the fun stuff is great for marketing and entertainment, it’s also important to show the other side of the coin. Don’t get the wrong idea about the fly tarpon game. The weather is the biggest factor of your trip and it will either smile or get angry at you. Through the years, I have fished countless bad weather days with high winds, rain, clouds, wet rides, blustery cold winds…. those days have brought a few to zero shots at fish all day… for days, sometimes weeks, during long stretches of bad weather. Also, very important to say, I have also caught fish in the worst of the weathers. Some days, 1 shot caught 1 fish, and that’s all the action we had all day. Other days, had great fishing against all odds in totally adverse conditions. You never know until you go and you won’t catch them in the hotel or the bar. That can happen any month or season of the year in south Florida, not only in tarpon season. As far as tarpon, it doesn’t only happen in the pre-season winter months. I’ve seen wicked weather anytime during April, May or June, prime tarpon time, the same way that I’ve seen beautiful weather in any of those months. Every year is different. Weather patterns have changed worldwide and continue to become more and more unpredictable. As long as your guide considers the weather safe and still feasible to have a few opportunities , even if they’re minimum, GO! Sometimes you will get rewarded. Just do yourself a favor: set your expectations right. Get mentally and physically prepared
