DEC Lifts Drought Watch Statewide
DEC has updated drought conditions across the state, returning all 62 New York counties to “Normal” status. In cooperation with the State's Drought Management Task Force, DEC updated drought status from “Drought Watch” to “Normal” statewide, including New York City, after assessing recent precipitation and elevated levels of ground and surface water.

While statewide and regional hydrological conditions have notably improved, localized dry conditions may persist. DEC encourages New Yorkers to continue reducing unnecessary water use and waste.

Amazing to see such a beautiful bird.

Maybe the cold does have its perks! This very large, rare winter visitor was spotted in upstate New York recently. Snowy owls can be found in open areas (fields, marshes, beaches, airports, frozen lake shores) where they often perch low or on the ground. Often New Yorkers will tend to spot more Snowy owls when prey numbers are low in the arctic.

Here are some cool features about this arctic bird:
🦉 Snowy owls have a lot of feathers to insulate from the arctic temperatures. This makes them one of the heaviest owl species in North America.
🦉 Their feet are covered with feathers all the way down their toes, like fluffy slippers, which also provides ample insulation.
🦉 The arctic summer forces snowy owls to hunt by daylight. Unlike most owls that are nocturnal, snowy owls are diurnal.
🦉 Snowy owls wingspan can reach up to 55”. These powerful wings covered in what is called lax plumage (which appears like downy whips on the surface of their feathers) help them silently sneak up on or accelerate after their prey.
