Visit Cook County is excited to announce that submissions for the annual Heart of Hospitality Award are now open. Visit Cook County understands the value of recognizing employees delivering service to our guests. We are asking our Cook County hospitality service partners to nominate one employee who stands out and enhances the visitor’s experience in Cook County, MN. Nominations will be accepted from each tourism community: Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, Grand Portage and Lutsen/Tofte/Schroeder.

10:20 PM Lights out right now. Go out and take a peek. Wish upon a shooting star, too — tonight is also a Perseid Meteor shower evening. It’s going to be magic out there. Photo by Annette Cozzi, taken a few minutes ago, looking towards the beach from the west end of the lake. Loons singing, to make it even better. Look for pink tonight — this is a much rosier light show than we usually see.

We abruptly went from a “not much happening” aurora forecast for this week to a “Yikes!” forecast. Crazy stuff has been happening on the sun, so it looks like energy from the solar flares may make it to the earth over the next 2 days — and that’s what creates Northern Lights. I *think* this high Tuesday forecast number might be for the early morning hours Tuesday, but anything is possible. We have a touch of Canadian wildfire smoke in the air, which could dim the light show. We shall see! Have your camera ready and look up a lot tonight and tomorrow night.
