Listen in as Ralph shares a little bit of maritime history on this foggy day on island: “The City of Columbus” was a steamship that met a tragic end off the shores of Martha’s Vineyard on January 18, 1884. Departing from Boston, Massachusetts, en route to Savannah, Georgia, the vessel encountered a fierce winter storm that battered its hull. Despite efforts to navigate the treacherous waters, the ship ultimately ran aground on Devil’s Bridge Shoal near Gay Head, Martha’s Vineyard.
The stranded passengers and crew faced a harrowing ordeal as they battled the elements and attempted to reach safety. Fortunately, with the assistance of local fishermen and Wampanoag rescue crews, all individuals aboard were successfully evacuated from the sinking vessel. However, “The City of Columbus” was irreparably damaged and soon succumbed to the relentless pounding of the waves, disappearing beneath the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The wreck of “The City of Columbus” remains a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by seafarers navigating the unpredictable waters of the New England coast during the 19th century. Today, artifacts from the ship serve as poignant reminders of the maritime history of Martha’s Vineyard and the bravery of those who risked their lives to save others.
