Here's a cool story about one family's 3 Generations of Disney Imagineering Moms! ❤️🏰❤️
Leota Thomas (pictured working on the pirate heads 🙂) started working for Disney in the animation department as a young girl. She met Harvey Toombs, a feature animator with Disney, in 1947 and they quickly got married. In 1948, Leota left the Disney Company to have a family and didn't return until 1962 where she joined WED to work on Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room. In the 60's, fellow future Disney Legend Yale Gracey approached Leota about an effect he was working on for the Haunted Mansion. It was a projected disembodied head for a cystal ball, and he thought Leota would be perfect for it. Madame Leota has been entertaining guests in the Crystal Ball for generations, and Leota Toombs' voice can still be heard at the end of the attraction, beckoning guests to "Hurry baaaack..." 🤯
Leota's daughter, Kim Irvine, basically grew up in Disneyland. She said in a story in People Magazine, "I remember walking through the warehouse one time, and they had a mock-up of Jose, the main bird in the Tiki Room. One of the animators had him face towards me and mouth, 'Hi, Kim. How you doing today?' I still think of that when I see Jose in the Tiki Room." Kim took an internship for the summer with Walt Disney Imagineering in 1970, moving to Orlando to paint dolls in preparation for it's a small world's Grand Opening. She still has not left Disney Imagineering, and has worked on iconic attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. As a matter of fact, when you visit Haunted Mansion Holiday in Disneyland, the head in the crystal ball is not Leota Toombs', but Kim Irvine's, since she looked so much like her mom! ❤️
Ali Irvine-Wheeler, Kim's daughter, was also bitten by the family Disney bug at a very young age. When her parents would say, "Let's go to the park" as a kid, they weren't talking about taking her to a playground or a baseball field. They went to Disneyland. After going to college for illustration, drawing, and painting, Ali applied with Imagineering (on her own, without her Mom's knowledge) in the Resort Enhancement department. Of course, in the family tradition, Ali landed the job (after having a daughter of her own ❤️) in 2017. You've probably seen the props she's designed throughout the resorts and parks.
These days, when Kim strolls through Disneyland early in the morning, she always makes sure she walks by the exit of the Haunted Mansion. There, even from outside the building, she can hear her Mom's voice. "Hurry baaack..." ❤️
Thank you so much for reading this one! This comes from that People Magazine article I mentioned and from just years of reading about Disneyland every chance that I get! I hope you enjoyed this one and have a great day!! ❤️🏰❤️
