B29 Bomber

B29 Bomber B-29 Bomber In Lake Mead After lying on the bottom of Lake Mead for more than 55 years this exciting dive site is open again for divers to see. Capt.

Since the discovery of the sunken B-29 Bomber in Lake Mead in August 2002 the wreck site has fallen under a Special Diving Restriction preventing visitation by the general public. This is not an undue hardship to the general public as this site has / had significant historical importance and has been designated a submerged cultural resource. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area has been designat

ed as the custodian of the B-29 and all of its appurtenances. The National Park Service has documented the wreck site and have conducted appropriate archeological studies on the site including measurement surveys, documentation with both still and video imaging. They have determined that the site is stable and not under imminent danger of destruction by the elements. Considering that archeological and documentation have been completed the National Park Service is has opened the wreck site of the B-29 so that qualified individuals can visit the dive site with permitted escorts. The National Park Service recently selected Scuba Training and Technology Inc. (Tech Diving Limited) as the exclusive company authorized to conduct Guided Dives on the B-29. The CUA is highly restrictive and only allows for 100 client dives during 2021. As such the B-29 will become the most highly sought after technical dive in the country. Scuba Training and Technology Inc. was chosen for this special CUA because we are a a fully insured recreational and technical diving company. We are uniquely qualified to conduct the diving operations, education and guide service on the B-29. Our experience in technical diving, technical dive training, education, expeditions, underwater archeology, shipwreck exploration and conservation is unmatched in the Southwest Region. We have conducted research on many of the major shipwrecks in the United States including the USS Monitor (permit only), Andrea Doria, Wilkes Barre, the Lexingon, RMS Republic, and the co-discovery of the B-36 Bomber in San Diego. We are also the company that had the initial permits for the B29 in 2007 and 2008, and 2015. Our permit runs through 2022. The DiveTheB29 dive team consists of:

B-29 is still closed for the foreseeable future. The Lake level is too low, and there are no emergency services available in that area of the lake.

Lake Mead is still too low for us to get to B29. Thanks for your patience. We will keep you all updated.

Little update... Lake Mead is now at its lowest level ever. 1,045.4 feet elevation is 40 feet lower than it was two years ago at 1085. This is putting the B-29 pretty shallow. With the lake being this low none of the Launch Ramps we use are open. And the run from lower basin is about 80 miles round trip making it unreasonable for day trips. We will need to wait to see what happens in the fall with water levels. If we get up another 20 feet then we may be able to resume B-29 trips. In the meantime, Jona and I are heading up to the bomber next week to do our annual photo survey. It's 2 days with an overnight camp out, and we will post photos of the Superfortress. Stay Tuned!

With Lake Mead water levels being at an all time low, and the launch ramps we use for B29 non existent now, we are holding off till the fall for B29 dives. Keep in touch with us.

July 21, 1948 was when the B-29 Superfortress crashed into Lake Mead. With great skill and luck the entire crew survived. Seventy -three years later the Bomber still rests at the bottom of Lake Mead.

Tech Diving Limited / Scuba Training and Technology Inc. has had all of the CUA permits from the National Park Service to conduct guided dives on this site since the first one in 2007. We have been fortunate to have seen and taken others to see this site in every condition imaginable for the great lake of Lake Mead. We first started diving the site at 185 feet depth, last week with the severe drought and massive water consumption in the Southwest the B-29 Bomber now sits in 95 feet of water.

Our current CUA permit runs through the end of 2022. We have finished up our summer on the site as the heat becomes to great on the surface for most people and the visiblity diminishes. We will be back on it in the fall. And will start posting our end-of-year and 2022 schedule soon.

A few years back when our 2015 permit was issued we worked with Troy Hayden of FOX10 Phoenix on a special story of the B-29- We earned an Emmy for it. Check it out https://youtu.be/WNcwn1wDZj0
