Day 10 in Ericeira: A Tapestry of Memories

Today, we explored the charming streets of Ericeira, indulging in ouriço pastries paired perfectly with coffee ☕🍰. We stopped by the local yarn store, but had to return when they opened after lunch to explore their treasure trove of colors and textures🧶. As the sun set over the Atlantic, we savored a dinner of fresh clams and dourada fish, a testament to the beautiful simplicity and complexity of Portuguese cuisine 🌅🍽️.

Portugal is a land of such paradoxes, much like the "saudade" we feel tonight. Our hearts are full yet tinged with the bittersweetness of our last full day here 💖. Gazing out over the ocean, we find solace in knowing this isn't a farewell but a promise of future gatherings, knitting sessions, and shared stories with newfound friends 🌊🤝.

🏺 Day 9: Treasure Hunts and Palace Exploration

We hit the jackpot in Caldas, exploring the "Antiquities" Market on the second Sunday of the month! 🏺✨ Portuguese wares, baubles, and trinkets galore – it was a treasure hunt! Some of us even found irresistible goodies to take home. 🛍️❤️

Next, we ventured to the majestic city of Mafra, home to Portugal's largest palace. We toured the King and Queen's quarters (separated by the length of two football fields!), wandered through dining halls and music parlors, and marveled at the stunning palace library. 📚✨ The highlight? A carillon recital played on 98 bells in two towers, the largest ensemble in the world! 🔔🎶

Just in time for some knitting before dinner, we landed in Ericeira, where surfers and ocean breezes welcomed us. 🌊🏄‍♂️

🌟 Day 8: Birding, Street Art, Wine and Knitting!🌟

Today was a perfect blend of relaxation and creativity! 🌿

In the morning, we had a free morning to explore. Most of us returned to the local yarn shops after calculating how many skeins would fit in our suitcases. Some of us enjoyed birding and horticulture in the beautiful park of Caldas da Rainha. Others took the chance to wander the city, soaking in the vibrant street art, from sculptures to found objects, and even enjoyed some fado music in the praça, complete with a guest horse! 🎶🐴

In the evening, we gathered at Dorothy's for a delightful wine tasting, featuring some exquisite reserve wine brought by Lynn from our visit to Quinta da Plansel. 🍷 This gave us a chance to finish a section of our Mystery Knit-a-long. Dorothy wowed us with her stunning designs, showcasing flexible sizes and vibrant colors. 🌈

By the end of the day, we were all happily exhausted from the sensory overload! 🧶✨

🌟 Day 7 Caldas da Rainha: A Knitter’s Paradise Unveiled🌟

Today was all about relaxation and creativity in beautiful Caldas da Rainha! 🧶✨

We kicked off the day with an inspiring workshop hosted by our amazing Knitting Guru, Dorothy Bulac-Eriksen Her loft workshop was filled with her stunning designs, both published and unpublished. What a talent! 🌟

We learned two new techniques before heading out for a fun Yarn Store Crawl.🧶 Our stops included Coolchetes Retrosaria workshops and Traça Trapos, where we helped deplete their yarn (and button!) supply. 🛍️

The day ended perfectly with a lovely group dinner and an evening stroll. It was wonderful to have a relaxing day to knit in the park, chat with locals, or enjoy a coffee in the praça. ☕🌳

🌟 Day 6 of the Portugal Knitting Experience: A Tapestry of Delights! 🌟

🍇 Our journey took us from the sunny hills of Évora to the enchanting vineyards of Quinta da Plansel. There, we met the remarkable Dorina and her talented daughters, Julia and Luisa. Together, they weave magic—running an innovative winery that not only produces fantastic wine but also nurtures hundreds of indigenous Portuguese vines. 🍷🌿

🏰 Leaving the Alentejo behind, we embarked on a adventure into medieval times. Óbidos, with its cobbled streets, ancient walls, stone ramparts, and imposing history took our breath away, only to be outdone by the incredible vistas... the verdant hills, the terracotta rooftops, the azure sea in the distance. 🏰🌊

🍒 But wait, there’s more! We sipped ginjinha—a cherry liqueur with a hint of mischief—and explored hidden corners where Portuguese handicrafts enticed. Pottery, lace, and wooden wares—all waiting to find a place in our hearts and suitcases. 🎨🧵📦

👑 Our destination: Caldas da Rainha. Imagine stepping out of our hotel and being greeted by none other than the Rainha herself—the Queen! Her statue was there, as if to say, “Welcome to my realm.” 🌟👑

🌟 Day 5 in Estremoz: A Culinary and Cultural Adventure

First stop: LUNCH! And what a lunch it was. "Hidden" in the heart of Estremoz, Gadanha Mercearia stole our hearts! From Cold Strawberry Gazpacho to Roast Octopus with Potatoes and Bean Puree, every bite was a celebration of flavors. And that White Chocolate and Red Fruits Millefeuille? Divine! 😋

At the Berardo Collection Tile Museum, our energetic guide, Nuno, led us through a mesmerizing journey of ceramic art. The intricate tiles, spanning centuries, recounted stories of craftsmanship and creativity. Sipping Bacalhôa wines, including Moscatel from Setúbal, while KNITTING, felt like poetry. 🌟

On our way home, we stopped to visit David, our cork expert at Cortiçarte - Arte em Cortiça, who unraveled the magic of cork trees. From wine stoppers to spacecraft insulation, cork’s versatility amazed us. 🌳

🌟 Day 4 of the Portugal Knitting Experience: Wool, Stars, and Tradition 🌟

First stop: Fabrica Alentejana de Lanificios, where we took a step into history. Eight skilled weavers, their hands and arms moving rhythmically, crafted traditional regional items—blankets, scarves, and more. The looms told stories of generations past. 🧵

At Paula Neves's farm, Paula introduced us to her flock. We connected with this magical place: the land, the trees, the air... and the SHEEP! From Merino to Campaniça, the wool breeds fascinated us. But mainly we loved the making cute furry friends.🐑

After lunch, Paula guided us through wool transformation. We washed, carded, and spun raw fleece. Yarn emerged, inspiring future knitting projects. ✨

The ancient castle town of Monsaraz welcomed us. As the sun set, Chef Isabel's meal blended tradition and innovation at Sabores de Monsaraz. A taste of Portugal's heart!🌅🍽️

At the Observatório do Lago Alqueva - OLA, we witnessed Saturn rise. Stars were born, sparkled and died... and we marveled. No photos—just memories etched in the night. 🌠

🌞 Day 3 in Évora! We kicked off the morning with a cozy Knit On Location session in the Jardim Público (Large City Park). Elza, our knowledgeable guide, walked us through Évora’s rich history, sharing tales of Portugal’s past.

As we explored winding streets, ancient walls, and colorful tiles, the sun cast warm hues on the cobblestones. At sunset, we gathered for another magical knitting session.

Dinner at Tábua do Naldo featured fabulous Portuguese petiscos—small plates bursting with flavor. We sipped local wine, savoring the essence of the Alentejo. ❤️

🌟 Arraiolos Magic: Hand-Stitched Wool Carpets!

Day 2! We had the pleasure of working with Hortense who is keeping alive the traditional craft of Arraiolos rugs—Portuguese needlework masterpieces. These woolen carpets are made using an "oblique cross stitch" covering a linen foundation.

Arraiolos rugs have graced palaces and manor houses for centuries. Originally influenced by Persian and Turkish designs, they now showcase a wide range of patterns and colors.

We needed even more info, so after lunch we stopped int at the Centro Interpretativo do Tapete de Arraiolos to understand the wool production, dyeing, base mat weaving, and the intricate stitch work.

The inaugural Portuguese Knitting Experience has kicked off!

A visit to Retrosaria Rosa Pomar in the heart of Lisbon was our first stop. Rosa herself was there to greet us and share her knowledge of the history of knitting in Portugal. 🏺🐑

At Depozito.pt by A Vida Portuguesa, Ana Ramos taught us how to knit using the Portuguese method... yarn around the back of the neck or using a pin. At first most everyone was a bit confused, but there were so many AHA! moments...🧶😉

Thank you, Rosa and Ana, for sharing your expertise and passion. And thank you to the knitters who trekked across the Atlantic to be part of this colorful journey. 🎨😊

🎶✨ Closing the curtain on our 2024 Tuscany Choral Experience with hearts full and voices soaring! ✨🎶

This week has been an incredible journey of music, connection, and unforgettable moments. From the serene mountain vineyards above Lucca to the warm sand on the beach at Viareggio, to the narrow streets of Lucca itself, our group immersed themselves in the culture and beauty of this region of Tuscany. On Friday, we absolutely filled the ConVICTus Chapel in Lucca with beautiful sound, drawing passers-by off the street and delighting our audience. Our final concert in Capannori with Canticum Novum was not just a great performance but a celebration of our shared love for music. The night ended perfectly with midnight pizza, laughter, and the joy of new friendships.

Thank you to everyone who made this journey so special. Our hearts are forever touched by the beauty of Tuscany and the warmth of our new friends. Until we meet again, arrivederci! 🇮🇹❤️🎵

Our 2024 Tuscany Choral Experience has been incredible so far!

Between truly enjoyable rehearsals where the talented Jennaya Robison and Brett Robison fine-tuned our harmonies, we’ve eaten our way across Lucca, Pisa, and Viareggio. The olive oil tasting was a particular treat, where the Maestro d’Olio invited us into his home to offer a deeper appreciation for one of Tuscany’s staple products. Walking through the charming streets of this beautiful region, we’ve soaked in the local history and culture, creating lasting memories with every step.

This journey has beautifully combined our love for music with the rich heritage and scenic landscapes of Tuscany. More to come as we prepare for our first performance tomorrow evening!
