Happy Independence Day Brazil!!

It was 202 years ago, on September 7th 1822 when Prince Pedro, son of Pedro I, the first Emperor of Brazil, declared Brazil's independence from Portugal.

On 2 September 1822, a new decree with Lisbon's demands arrived in Rio de Janeiro, while Prince Pedro was in São Paulo. Princess Maria Leopoldina, acting as Princess Regent, met with the Council of Ministers and decided to send her husband a letter advising him to proclaim Brazil's independence. The letter reached Prince Pedro on 7 September 1822. He agreed he had no other option in the face of this constant effort by Lisbon to undermine Brazilian sovereignty. That same day, in a famous scene at the shore of the Ipiranga River, he declared the country's independence, shouting "Hail to the independence, to freedom and to the separation of Brazil from Portugal!" He unsheathed his sword affirming that "For my blood, my honor, my God, I swear to give Brazil freedom," and later cried out: "Brazilians, Independence or death!", thus ending 322 years of colonial dominance of Portugal over Brazil. He was the Emperor of Brazil from 12 October 1822 – 7 April 1831.

Paraty is a very old, charming colonial town on the Green Coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, about 140 miles from the City of Rio. Founded in 1667, it is rich with history and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019. A visit to Paraty while in Rio is highly recommended! There is so much to do and see there. The Historic Center District has cobblestone streets and no motor vehicles are permitted on them.

Maybe the coolest feature of Paraty is that once a month, when the moon is 🌕 full and the tide is high, the sea water rises above its normal levels and 🌊 pours into the streets of the Historic Center District through openings in the seawalls at the harbor. The streets are flooded for a short time until the tide recedes. This is how the streets are washed! An amazing sight to see.

🇧🇷Update on visa requirements🇧🇷
Visas will be required to enter Brazil starting April 10th for citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia.

Brazil historically had a policy of reciprocity for requiring visas for tourists of other nationalities. The US requires Brazilians to have a visa to travel here, and last year granted 1.1 million of them.

In 2019 the Bolsonaro administration waived this requirement for citizens of the US, Canada, Australia and Japan to facilitate tourism. Only to have the pandemic hit the next year forcing New Years Eve celebrations and Carnaval to be canceled!

The new administration of Lula da Silva reinstated the reciprocity policy last year, to take effect January 10th. Japan agreed to permit Brazilians to travel there without a visa so they remain exempt. On December 1 a website was launched for American, Canadian and Australian travelers to apply for electronic visas. Unfortunately there were problems with the process, causing concern for the tourism sector right at the beginning of high season!

On January 4 a decision was made to postpone the requirement until April 10. Also the requirements for bank statements and travel iteneraries were dropped, and the validity of the visas was extended from 2 years to 10 years for Americans and 5 years for Canadians and Australians. And it only costs $80, half what it did in the old days when one had to visit the consulate to have the paper visa glued into your passport! The electronic visa is sent to your email.

The website to apply for the visa is brazil.vfsevisa.com.

Today is a special day in Rio de Janeiro as we celebrate the 242nd birthday of the charming neighborhood of Santa Teresa!

This neighborhood breathes history, art, and culture. Its narrow streets, well-preserved colonial mansions, and bohemian atmosphere make it a true Carioca treasure.

Over the years, Santa Teresa has become a haven for artists, intellectuals, and culture enthusiasts. It's a neighborhood where you'll find art galleries, studios, amazing bars and restaurants, and a breathtaking view of the city from the famous streetcar.

Today, we celebrate not only the long history of this iconic neighborhood but also its influence on the cultural identity of the Marvelous City.

Weighing 635 metric tons and standing 30 meters (98 feet) tall, it is the largest art deco statue in the world, and is both a cultural icon of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil and a symbol of Christianity around the world.

We are totally fascinated and in love with Largo do Boticário (Apothecary's Square), named for its origins as the location of a well known and successful apothecary in the 1830s, in the old neighborhood of Cosme Velho. The defining feature of the square appeared in the 1920s - 1940s with the development of neocolonial houses. Some of the original houses were later refurbished by modernist architects. During its "golden age", Largo do Boticário became filled with huge houses owned by well-known figures in Brazilian society and foreigners attracted by the parties and social events held by the neighborhood's illustrious residents. After falling into decay for many years, AccorHotels bought the six houses that make up the architectural complex of "Largo do Boticário" in 2018 and restored and developed it into a wonderful hostel under their Jo&Joe Brand. It opened last year with 320 beds in 80 rooms and apartments. Near the Corcovado train station (the train that goes up the mountain to the Christ the Redeemer statue) it is not to be missed!

The construction of the Rio-Niterói Bridge involved numerous difficulties and also spawned rumors, myths and stories.

According to newspapers and magazines at the time, 32 people died during the construction process, although the number is believed to be much higher.

Journalist Romildo Guerrante, who covered the construction of the Rio-Niterói bridge, says that reports were made but never published: censorship prevented newspapers from publishing about accidents and deaths.

“Several workers died. In one of the accidents, I remember well, 12 people died, including an engineer. As research in the Jornal do Brasil of the National Library confirms, the accident took place on March 25, 1970, that is, one year after the beginning of the works.”

Since then, stories about the construction have circulated. The best known legend is that workers would have been concreted together with the pillars that support the bridge. The technique used to build the work – the so-called tubulões – was still rare in Brazil. Guerrante supposes that this could be one of the factors that caused the successive accidents.

The pipe, for civil engineering, consists of a hollow tube that is then coated with reinforced concrete. The base needs to be widened to give greater stability. It is in this widening process that the workers enter and work inside the tube; phase in which accidents possibly occurred.

The death of the concrete workers was not a legend. In that censored accident in which 12 people died, the tube ruptured violently. There was no chance for whoever was inside. What is known is that the bodies were not rescued, as the concrete covered everything – says the journalist.

A LUZ DO SABER
