A number of countries in the E.U. have proposed bans on short haul flights where a train route exists to reduce carbon emissions.
France, in particular, intends to eliminate 12% of their domestic flights.
These will be for flights less than 2 and a half hours. The exception will be international flight connections. This will begin in March 2022.
This is a step toward reducing huge amounts of carbon emissions from the airlines, short flights in Europe amount to 3.5 million tons.
And a train ride isn't a bad thing. It's like taking a step back in time. Slowing travel down. Enjoying the scenery. How romantic!
And sustainable. 😉

Sleep retreats aren't necessarily new programs, but the focus is. Never before have we been at home for everything, work and play and sleep - our bodies can be confused, the sleep hormone may be off.
So these resorts have been coming up with programs that have "Sleep Suites" with no electronics allowed for true rest. There are much more in depth parts, up to 3 weeks - yoga, hiking, acupuncture, massage, music, etc.

So how do you know if they're actually eco?
There are ways of making sure that your hotel is actually doing what they say, and not just *greenwashing.
*a form of marketing used to persuade the public that an organization's products, aims, and policies are environmentally friendly, but in reality are not. Boo!

Let's get into it.
1. Hotels and resorts that really are all about the environment have the receipts, and they show them. They may have the B Corp Certification and other certifications. All certifications aren't equal though. They can be bought bogusly through pseudo environmental organizations. It's good to familiarize yourself with credible ecolabels and certifications, like those listed on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s website.
Sustainability or environmental reports are the most direct record of a hotel’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
2. It's EXCELLENT for everyone to make small steps towards being environmentally responsible. But if light bulbs are what they tout as making them "Eco-Friendly", look elsewhere.
Look for a bigger-picture approach to sustainability and really think about those small things.
Is the hotel offering organic shampoo, but in mini single-use plastic bottles? Are they encouraging you to reuse towels to save water, but offer a plethora of water in plastic bottles?
Hotels that truly care about sustainability take measures to invest in renewable energy, reduce plastics(or even better, refuse to use them on site. We stayed in the Eco-Luxury @HotelAguasClaras in Costa Rica. And they did not allow plastics on site. Each bungalow had 3 kinds of recycling bins), and cut down on unnecessary water waste.

Have any of you been to bioluminescent waters?
Have you heard of them?
They're a result of extremely high concentrations of a bioluminescent phytoplankton. Essentially, they are tiny microscopic plants floating in the water. When disturbed, they shoot off a burst of light flash lasting a fraction of a second.
Wow right?
There are a few places worldwide that have these bioluminescent areas. Puerto Rico, Grand Cayman, Vietnam, and Australia are among the few.

The Cayman Islands have kept their borders basically closed with very strict quarantine rules. They're in a 5 phase reopening, and starting October 14th, vaccinated adults will be free to visit the Caymans without quarantine!
