Though her name did not make historic documents, her fierce determination to defend her granddaughters on the Underground Railroad did. Her two young grands, escaped from Tennessee on a Southern line of the Underground Railroad, managing to reach Cabin Creek, Randolph County, Indiana, where lived their grandparents and most of their near relatives, who were free.

This neighborhood was settled primarily by free African Americans who had purchased government land in forty or eighty acre lots. The town was densely populated with free Black folks who had formed the community, which included a good school.

Grandma threatened to split any man in two halves with a corncutter if they dared to enter her home, where her grand babies were. A crowd of 200 formed, causing so much commotion, that the community was able to distract and prolong arguments, providing time for plans to be made, and the girls to be disguised as boys and whisked off before the crowd, hidden in plain sight.
